MissionFish Wins Top Award From Social Enterprise Alliance

WASHINGTON, DC - MissionFish (www.missionfish.org), a service of the Points of Light Foundation dedicated to helping nonprofits raise money through eBay, recently received First Place for growth stage ventures in the Social Enterprise Alliance's 2004 Earned Income Showcase.

A panel of grantmakers awarded the top honor to MissionFish earlier this month at the 5th Gathering of the Social Enterprise Alliance (www.se-alliance.org) in San Francisco. Their decision was based on the clarity, market demand, social impact, creativity-innovation, and income potential of the MissionFish business model.

According to SEA President Beth Bubis, "the earned income projects showcased at the 5th Gathering demonstrate the creativity of the nonprofit community, but more importantly they dispel the myth that nonprofits cannot operate as good businesses." Nonprofit social enterprises pursue a "double bottom line" of social impact and net revenues, and the generation of new and diverse income streams offers long-term sustainability to their charitable missions.

MissionFish helps more than 2,100 nonprofit organizations benefit from online trading, through an exclusive relationship with eBay. The site makes it possible for eBay sellers to list items in The World's Online MarketplaceT and donate some of their proceeds to a benefiting nonprofit. By providing the technology, tools and support to make this process possible, MissionFish is helping organizations access a whole new source of unrestricted funding.

"We believe that generated revenue can have a profound effect on an organization's capacity to serve," says MissionFish Executive Director Sean Milliken. "This award is an especially gratifying validation of that belief, and of our potential to make a difference for the nonprofit sector."
