WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 15, 2007--CARE, a leading
humanitarian organization fighting global poverty, announced this week that UPS will receive its International Humanitarian Award for Corporate Philanthropy. The award will be presented by CARE President and CEO Dr. Helene D. Gayle on May 17 at the organization's 61st Anniversary Celebration in Washington, D.C.

The May 17 Diplomatic Celebration, hosted by Ambassador Carolina Barco of Colombia, honors the diplomatic corps and the international relationships that make CARE's work possible throughout the world and recognizes the importance of individual and corporate philanthropy. In addition to UPS, the event will honor entrepreneur, philanthropist and
CARE ambassador Sheila Johnson, who will receive CARE's International Humanitarian Award for Global Change, and award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen, who will receive CARE's International Humanitarian Award for Global Vision.

UPS has contributed more than $1,000,000 during a 14-year partnership that has supported CARE's work around the world. Since 1995, UPS has generously underwritten CARE's Emergency Transportation Shipping Fund. "Having this money readily available has made it possible for CARE to prepare and respond effectively to emergencies," said Gayle. In addition, UPS has donated to CARE's emergency and relief efforts throughout the world, including Kosovo, Sudan, Angola, Cambodia, Vietnam, Lebanon, Haiti and Nicaragua.

The Anniversary Celebration -- which features a series of dinners hosted by ambassadors and the annual Diplomatic Celebration -- commemorates the sending of the first CARE Package on May 11, 1946, to provide relief to survivors of World War II.

For more than six decades, CARE has reflected a remarkable spirit of giving on behalf of the American people and has served as a model of how poor people around the world can be empowered to help themselves. Last year, CARE's programs improved the lives of 55 million people through some 900 projects in 66 countries. CARE tackles underlying causes of poverty so that people can become self-sufficient.

Recognizing that women and children suffer disproportionately from poverty, CARE places special emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters and helps people rebuild their lives.

The May Anniversary Celebration is CARE's only fundraiser. This year's celebration is expected to raise more than $600,000 for the organization.
