Charlotte, NC - February 28, 2007 - Corruption and collusion are nothing new for private prisons. But with back-room boosts from the Department of Homeland Security, the stakes are getting higher, according to Private Prisons: Commerce in Souls, a TV documentary premiering today.

This new episode of SourceCode, Free Speech TV's original news magazine program, looks inside the private prison boom, and at the growing opposition to for-profit private prisons, jails and detention centers.

"This program just confirms what we've been saying all along," said Gail Tyree, Grassroots Leadership's Campaign Director. "For-profit private prisons, jails and detention centers have no place in a democratic society. They need to be abolished."

Tyree is featured in the TV special, speaking about the successful campaign she organized last year in Shelby County, Tennessee to prevent construction of what would have been the world's largest for-profit private jail.

Grassroots Leadership is a southern-based national organization that works to abolish all for-profit private prisons, jails and detention centers, as a step towards establishing a prison and criminal justice system that is truly humane and just. Additional information is available at www.grassroots.org.

Private Prisons: Commerce in Souls also includes images from a multi-media community arts project created by former prisoners, and interviews with prison and criminal justice advocates.

The show premiers on Wednesday, February 28 at 6:00 pm eastern time on Free Speech TV, DISH Network Channel 9415. Repeat showings will take place:

  • Wednesday, February 28 at 10:30 pm eastern time
  • Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 am eastern time
