WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 2007--The International Business Ethics Institute (IBEI), a private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible business practices around the world, has appointed James C. Murphy, Ph.D., as Executive Director. Dr. Murphy's responsibilities include developing and directing the Institute's training and educational activities worldwide, furthering the adoption of business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives by Global 1000 companies.

Dr. Murphy, 54, brings more than twenty years of experience in CSR, business ethics, sustainability, external relations, business development, communications, and international consulting to his new position. Prior to joining IBEI, he served as Associate Director of the Amsterdam-based Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the leading global framework for CSR and sustainability reporting used by more than 1,000 corporations and organizations worldwide.

At GRI, Dr. Murphy managed external affairs with an emphasis on investor and partnership relations with companies, governments, foundations, and NGOs. During his tenure, he developed and managed the G3 Consortium, a group of leading global companies that support the GRI; launched the GRI Technology Partnership; and represented GRI at numerous international conferences and training seminars, including events organized by The Conference Board, Les Echos, the U.S. Business Council for Sustainable Development, and The World Bank.

Throughout his career, Dr. Murphy has presented and published articles on CSR and corporate ethics, governance, corporate social engagement, sustainability, knowledge management, non-financial measurement and reporting, and innovation and public policy. He began his career as a faculty member at St. Mary's College/University of Notre Dame, and has held positions as a senior executive at universities including Rice, Colgate, Tulane, and the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Dr. Murphy holds a Ph.D. in political science from Rice University, and received undergraduate and graduate degrees in history and political philosophy from the University of Houston. He studied French literature, politics, and history at the University of Strasbourg, pursued post-graduate studies and research at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris while a Chateaubriand Fellow, and lived and worked in Europe for many years.
