PURCHASE, N.Y., March 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) a 2009 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award in recognition of its continued leadership in protecting our environment through energy efficiency. PepsiCo's accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 31, 2009.

PepsiCo, an ENERGY STAR partner since 2007, will be honored for its long-term commitment to energy efficiency. After more than a decade of action, the cumulative effects of PepsiCo's resource conservation program have resulted in an improvement in energy efficiency for its U.S. operations of nearly 30 percent. In 2008 alone, PepsiCo reduced energy costs by $90 million and cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 575,000 metric tons. Across the U.S., top companies and organizations are leading the way toward a more energy-efficient future through participation in ENERGY STAR.

Last year, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $19 billion on their energy bills and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 29 million vehicles.

"This recognition exemplifies PepsiCo's commitment to energy efficiency in our own day-to-day operations and how we are leveraging our partnership with the ENERGY STAR program to encourage key business partners to implement energy conservation programs in their operations," said Rob Schasel, PepsiCo Director of Energy & Utilities. "PepsiCo's Resource Conservation Outreach Program has made tools and expertise available to our contract manufacturers, franchise bottlers, and other key suppliers through dedicated PepsiCo resources. Our years of partnership with ENERGY STAR demonstrate our strong commitment to preserving the environment through energy efficiency. We view our ENERGY STAR partnership as a key way to fight climate change."

PepsiCo's mission to reduce energy consumption is part of the company's commitment to sustainable growth, defined as Performance with Purpose. PepsiCo has announced goals to reduce water consumption by 20 percent, reduce electricity consumption by 20 percent, and reduce fuels consumption by 25 percent per unit of production by 2015 as compared to 2006 consumption.

The 2009 Sustained Excellence Awards are given to a select group of organizations that have exhibited outstanding leadership year after year. These winners have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive goals, employing innovative approaches, and showing others what can be achieved through energy efficiency. These awards recognize ongoing leadership across the ENERGY STAR program including energy-efficient products, services, new homes and buildings in the commercial, industrial and public sectors. Award winners are selected from more than 12,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

"EPA is delighted to recognize PepsiCo with the 2009 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence award," said Kathleen Hogan, Director of the Climate Protection Partnerships Division at the U.S. EPA. "PepsiCo's leadership on energy efficiency has yielded impressive results for their bottom line and our global environment, showing us all what can be accomplished through sustained commitment and action."
