BD Biosciences Facility in San Jose, California Achieves LEED Silver Certification

March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- BD, a leading global medical technology company, announced today that its new BD Biosciences facility in San Jose has received Silver certification under the U.S. Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) green building certification system.

LEED(R) certification is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. It demonstrates that a building is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to work.

"This recognition affirms the progress BD is making in its efforts to conserve energy and be environmentally responsible in its operations," said Bill Rhodes, President, BD Biosciences.

The 81,500 square-foot building, which sits on the 27--acre BD Biosciences campus, opened in June 2008 after being reengineered and refurbished. Overall the building is projected to use 20% less energy, and 200,000 gallons per year less water, than a comparable building in San Jose. The lighting systems exceed California energy efficiency standards (Title 24) by more than 15 percent. More than 90 percent of materials demolished during the $27 million project were recycled.

BD achieved points towards LEED Silver Certification for pollution control and diversion during construction, energy efficiency (mechanical and lighting), occupant comfort, ergonomics, green housekeeping, water use reduction (with landscaping and automatic restrooms), storage and collection of recyclables, indoor air quality, environmental tobacco smoke control, and low-emitting materials (paints, coatings and carpet systems).

"San Jose is proud of BD Biosciences for its adoption of environmentally responsible practices, showing its continued dedication towards improving the quality of life in our community," said San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed. "Its leadership has demonstrated that implementing green practices makes both environmental and fiscal sense."

BD strongly believes in balancing the "triple bottom line": achieving strong economic performance, promoting environmental stewardship and advancing social responsibility. To learn more about BD's sustainability efforts, please visit www.bd.com/sustainability.
