Schering-Plough Corporation (NYSE: SGP) again ranked among America's 50 Best Companies for Minorities in a survey conducted by FORTUNE magazine and the Council on Economic Priorities, a nonprofit research group.
The survey cited the company for "solid" minority representation among the 50 highest-salaried executives and gains in the percentage of minority managers. Ranked 45 among the 50-company diversity elite, this is the second year that Schering-Plough has been recognized for its diversity efforts by the FORTUNE survey.

"Schering-Plough is very pleased to be recognized as one of the nation's top companies for minorities," said Hugh A. D'Andrade, vice chairman and chief administrative officer of Schering-Plough. "The company values the important contributions of minority employees at all levels and is committed to equal employment opportunity and diversity programs as integral elements of its human resources strategy."

"A commitment to workforce diversity is an important responsibility of every manager at Schering-Plough," said John P. Ryan, senior vice president, human resources of Schering-Plough. "This commitment encompasses not only our recruiting efforts, but also in challenging employees of both genders and all nationalities and races to achieve their full potential through career development and job opportunities," Ryan said.

The survey reported that minority employees at Schering-Plough comprise nearly one-quarter of the company's total workforce, noting that eight of the company's 50 highest-paid employees are minorities. The percentage of minorities among corporate officers and managers increased from 16.2 percent last year to 17.2 percent. Minorities hold two positions on the 15-person Board of Directors and comprise more than a quarter of company employees hired in the past year.

The survey, published in the July 10, 2000 issue of FORTUNE, compared companies in 15 categories, from percentage of new hires to whether the company ties performance reviews and bonuses to diversity goals. The survey focused special attention on minority positions in leadership roles in the company, including the board of directors, senior executives, highest-paid managers and throughout the management chain. In addition, the survey looked at each company's minority turnover rate with that of non-minorities and assessed how well minorities are represented in management versus the total workforce. Among other areas, the survey asked about company purchases from minority-owned firms and charitable support of programs benefiting primarily minorities.
