CALGARY,CANADA,. - June 5, 2008 - McTavish Elementary School from Victoria, British Columbia, is the Grand Prize-winner of Quantum Shift TV's first annual "Be the Change! Share the Story" online video contest. "The McTavish Green Team are an outstanding example of what it means to follow Gandhi's advice to 'be the change you want to see in the world,'" said Leif Utne, VP of Marketing at the Calgary-based web broadcaster. "We hope that by sharing their story they will inspire kids across Canada and around the world to take action in their communities to make the world a better place."

As Grand Prize-winner, McTavish Elementary will receive a prize package worth US$50,000, including cash, books, Elluminate e-learning software, and an organic garden and eco-friendly playground or skateboard park designed and built by celebrity athletes from the Action Sports Environmental Coalition (ASEC), the contest's main sponsor. The First Runner-Up will receive an eco-friendly skateboard ramp. And the Second Runner-Up will receive books and Fair Trade sports equipment,

The 'Be the Change' contest challenged youth in grades 1-12 at schools across North America to pick any environmental or humanitarian project and document their progress on it in two short videos uploaded on the Web at www.quantumshift.tv/schools. Out of 33 semifinalist teams, a panel of celebrity judges picked the McTavish team as one of three finalists. The public then voted to decide the order of the winners. McTavish edged out teams from La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California, and Eastview Middle School, in White Plains, New York.

The inspiring projects the finalist teams undertook included:

  • McTavish Green Team (McTavish Elementary School in Saanich, near Victoria, British Columbia) "“ The McTavish team created a comprehensive composting and recycling program that cut the school's waste by 80 percent.

  • LCC Social Justice (La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California) "“ The team's "Break Up with Bottled Water" campaign educated students about the impact of single-use plastic water bottles (38 billion thrown away last year in the US alone!) and encouraged them to switch to reusable containers.

  • Global Ambassadors (Eastview Middle School, White Plains, New York) "“ The team's "Fashion for a Cause" benefit raised money for clean water projects in Uganda.
"Look out world, kids are becoming mobilized, invested in their future, empowered to create media that is relevant to them and also are mobilizing their communities around issues that are important to them," said Frank Scura, Executive Director of ASEC. "This is a wake up call for all adults to pay attention to. This generation will be the first since the natives that cared for this land before it was industrialized to fully grasp the ideal that we do not own the world-we are merely inhabitants of it and caregiving its precious resources for future generations, the generation that is creating this media and the generations that will inherit it from them. On behalf of ASEC I would like to say that we are honored to be a part of this history making interaction. Viva La Youth, Viva La Resolution!"
