The Lastest Corporate Social Responsibility News - Countdown to sustainable Olympic Games

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia are less than one year away. As Canadian athletes train towards their goal of winning gold on home turf, these Games have already been quietly achieving social and environmental sustainability triumphs long before the lighting of the torch. The Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC) is embedding the values of Aboriginal participation and overall sustainability into all aspects of the Games.

To support these values, VANOC is leveraging sponsors' strong CSR programs and integrating them into a sustainable Games experience that goes beyond athletic achievement to benefit the broader community. For example, in alignment with their communications technology offering and long history of CSR, premier national sponsor Bell Canada includes the following commitments in their sponsorship agreement:

  • Work with First Nations and rural communities to maximize the legacy use of the broadband access corridor we are building between Vancouver and Whistler

  • Support the needs of organizations and individuals in the city's Downtown Eastside

  • Enable community-level economic development funding to seed locally-led projects

Another premier national partner, RBC, provides extensive funding to the Canadian Olympic School Program. This offers primary school students across Canada a chance to learn about the values of fairness, excellence, leadership, respect, physical activity, and sustainability. Projects on financial literacy and math are added to the program at the secondary school level.

There is also a significant effort to ensure the Games, from facilities to licensed products, meet social and environmental standards that are in line with the spirit of the Games, as well as the standards of corporate sponsors. For example, premier national partner and official Olympic team uniform supplier, Hbc, has been a Canadian leader in transparency on ethical sourcing, reporting on their activities since 2004 (before any other Canadian company).

This level of sustainability integration serves as inspiration for Canadian corporations. Clearly the Olympic mantra of "faster, higher, stronger" also applies to CSR practice.
