PHOENIX, AZ - AUGUST 30, 2007 - The Open Compliance and Ethics Group (OCEG), a nonprofit organization with a mission to help organizations align their governance, risk management, internal control and compliance (GRC) activities to drive business performance and promote integrity, announced today the release of a collaborative whitepaper entitled: Leading Corporate Integrity: Defining the Role of the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer.

"OCEG's research has revealed many benefits of integrating governance, risk management, internal control and compliance processes," says Scott L. Mitchell, chairman and CEO of OCEG. "This whitepaper provides excellent guidance on how to structure the role of the chief ethics and compliance officer to maximize the success and performance of integrated GRC processes."

Directly aligned to the core practices in the OCEG Foundation, the Whitepaper elaborates on:

  • The responsibilities of the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer as strategic personnel.

  • How the role of Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer relates to oversight responsibilities of the board and executive management of organizations.

  • Individual and organizational requirements for effective compliance and ethics capabilities.

"As a member of the OCEG Leadership Council, a Fellow at the Ethics Resource Center, and a practitioner who approaches compliance and ethics with an integrated perspective, it was an honor and a valuable experience to co-chair this project, and I'm proud of what we've achieved here." says Scott Roney, Vice President, Compliance and Ethics at Archer Daniels Midland Company. "We have brought together a core group of experts to define a unified set of beliefs about the challenges that face CECOs and realistic ways to overcome those challenges and advance the profession."

The Whitepaper represents the first cooperative effort of OCEG, the Business Roundtable Institute of Corporate Ethics (BRICE), the Ethics Resource Center (ERC), the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association (ECOA), and the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics (SCCE). OCEG looks forward to further collaborative initiatives with these organizations. The Whitepaper was the topic of a recent OCEG Ask the Commissioner webcast. The materials from the webcast along with the Whitepaper can be downloaded at http://www.oceg.org/view/USSC5.
