CHARLESTON, SC. - September 8, 2008 - Blackbaud, Inc. (Nasdaq: BLKB) announced that Charleston magazine and Coastal Community Foundation have selected the company as the winner of the Philanthropic Spirit category of their annual Giving Back Awards.

"Blackbaud has taken its corporate mission, 'make the world a better place,' to heart. In a fast paced world, the idea of steady improvement, through community support, is a powerful statement about core values," said George C. Stevens, Ph.D., Coastal Community Foundation president and CEO. "It's great to work with Charleston magazine in honoring local individuals and organizations like Blackbaud for their local pride and dedication."

In 2003 the Coastal Community Foundation partnered with Charleston magazine in creating the Charitable Events Calendar, which includes a listing of local fundraising events and is published annually. A year later, the partners created The Giving Back Awards to highlight local people, businesses, and organizations that give back to the community.

The Giving Back Philanthropic Spirit award is given to a business that fosters charitable giving in a significant manner. Blackbaud was chosen by a panel of six judges.

"With the immeasurable help of the folks at the Coastal Community Foundation, this calendar has become a labor of love for the staff of Charleston, as it's a way for us to contribute to these worthy causes," said Darcy Shankland, Charleston magazine editor-in-chief. "Likewise, our fourth annual Giving Back Awards is our chance to honor and shine the spotlight on some extraordinary individuals, businesses, and organizations that take their civic responsibilities very seriously and enjoy doing it."

Kevin Mooney, Blackbaud's senior vice president of sales and marketing and Chief Commercial Officer will accept the award. "We are extremely honored to be chosen as this year's recipient of the Philanthropic Spirit Award," he said. "Our corporate value, 'service to others makes the world a better place' is put into action in a number of ways throughout the communities we serve."

Each day, Blackbaud's employees work towards the company's mission of making positive change in the world by collaborating with the nonprofit community, both in providing software and services designed specifically for nonprofit organizations, and in their personal philanthropic commitments to nonprofits.

In addition to the recent formation of a corporate relations and philanthropy team, programs that Blackbaud has developed or supported to encourage employees to give back include:

  • Volunteer for Vacation "“ which allows employees to earn additional vacation days by volunteering with local nonprofits. Additionally, many employees participate in United Way's Day of Caring, taking a company-sponsored day off of work to volunteer with a nonprofit and make a difference in the community.
  • "Reward Your Passion' fund "“ which encourages employees to apply for a grant on behalf of a nonprofit where they volunteer. The grants are then awarded based on the employee's dedication to the organization.
  • Team Blackbaud "“ a grassroots employee-led volunteer corps that has been in existence since 1998. The Team, which conducts quarterly philanthropic campaigns, was recently expanded globally to include all of Blackbaud's worldwide offices, including a special group for remote employees.
Blackbaud will be honored on September 26 at Charleston magazine's annual Giving Back awards gala and is also featured in the September issue. Visit www.charlestonmag.com to read more.
