Education Advantage Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides educational opportunities to at-risk youth in low to moderate-income neighborhoods in Dallas and Los Angeles. The new Dallas Resource Room, located within a Learning Links Centers owned apartment building has been remodeled and equipped as a study center. It will house 10 computers with applicable software, wireless internet, over 300 educational books, various board games, arts and craft materials, earth and physical science related items and movies for over 40 students living within the 71-unit complex. Under the guide of the two teachers living in the building rent free, the Resource Room is used to assist the students with homework tasks, tutoring and mentoring.
"With the success of the resource rooms in our buildings in Los Angeles, we are excited to open our first new Dallas classroom and watch the educational development and interests of the children in the community increase," said Learning Links Centers/Education Advantage Foundation co-founder Joe Killinger. "Learning Links Centers plans on acquiring 600-1000 units in the Dallas Fortworth Metroplex area in the next 12 months, which will allow for us to open an additional to 4-6 resource rooms to help the children in those buildings."
Education Advantage Foundation's goal is to promote higher education by providing scholarships and no-cost after-school mentoring and tutoring programs to students. Through its expertise in the real estate business, Learning Links Centers acquires, refurbishes and manages apartment buildings in targeted neighborhoods, setting aside a percentage of the residential units for full-time teachers. Working In conjunction with Learning Links Centers, Education Advantage Foundation organizes, promotes and oversees the after school programs as well as "Life Enrichment" events for the children involved in the program.
EAF specially renovates one unit in each building to serve as a study suite called "The Resource Center." Resource Centers offer residents a safe haven from drugs, crime and gangs and provide a positive alternative to excessive television and video game use and other distractions. Each center is supplied with a mini library and reference materials such as books and maps, as well as computers with supervised Internet access, and teaching tools for the students and tutors within each building.
In addition, the 71-unit complex in Dallas, LLC currently owns and operates five buildings containing 104 units in Baldwin Village, Calif. With the added incentive of educational opportunities, the buildings become desirable destinations for renters, which minimizes vacancy, rental default and vandalism rates, thereby helping to improve community standards. Students participating in Education Advantage Foundation/Learning Links Centers programs range from kindergarten to the 12th grade.
