San Francisco, CA - March 12, 2008 - Stone-Buhr Flour Company today announced the general availability of the first certified sustainable all-purpose wheat flour in the Western United States. The product has been placed in the top 300 retailer locations in the Pacific Northwest.
Known as "Washington White" the new product has been certified sustainable by the nation's most comprehensive third-party certifier of sustainable foods, the nonprofit Food Alliance. The Food Alliance "stamp of approval" means the flour meets a rigorous set of environmental and social responsibility standards.
Stone-Buhr CEO Josh Dorf said, "This product has created quite a buzz, and has opened new retail channels for us. We are pleased to be providing consumers a high quality wheat flour that is good for the planet."
The sustainable flour is milled from wheat grown by Northwest family farmers known as Shepherds Grain. Through their use of "no-till" or "direct seed" practices the Shepherds Grain farmers are able to dramatically reduce soil erosion and enhance water retention.
No-till farming also has significant climate benefits as it requires less fossil fuel and preserves the soil's ability to trap and keep carbon out of the atmosphere making Washington White a "climate-friendly" flour.
Stone-Buhr plans to introduce additional certified sustainable products including the first certified sustainable Buttermilk Pancake mix in the third quarter of 2008.
The new certified sustainable wheat flour will be featured by Stone-Buhr at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California, March 14-16.
