SPRINGFIELD,MA. - September 4, 2008 - Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) and The College Board introduced today a free community-based educational program designed to boost SAT scores and open up scholarship opportunities for Springfield high school students.

Starting this school year, eligible eleventh grade students in Springfield can utilize at no cost the SAT Online Course(TM), an online tool that students across the nation use to help prepare for the SATs and to ultimately achieve higher test scores. The program is being offered to eleventh grade students attending public, private, parochial, and charter schools in Springfield.

"Supporting students in our community and promoting the importance of education have been long-standing initiatives at MassMutual," said Trish Robinson, Senior Vice President, Strategic Communications and Community Responsibility and Deputy Head of Government Relations. "We are excited to be able to offer this SAT Preparation Program to Springfield students, and hope they will take full advantage of this wonderful tool."

The SAT Online Course(TM), which involves a total of six full-length practice tests, gives students immediate feedback with lessons and quizzes to strengthen weak areas of performance. The entire cost of the program will be funded by MassMutual.

"SAT readiness has a huge impact on student success and that is why this on line course is going to be an extremely valuable resource for Springfield eleventh-graders," said Dr. Alan Ingram, Springfield's superintendent of schools. "I am thrilled that MassMutual will avail this tool to our youth at no cost and cannot wait for students to begin logging on to the program."

The SAT Preparation Program is part of a MassMutual's broader strategy to expand educational opportunities for local students. Other initiatives include:

  • The MassMutual Career Pathways Program. MassMutual provides up to 40 four-year $5,000 college scholarships, annually, to eligible high school seniors in Hampden (Mass.) and Hartford (Conn.) Counties. Recipients are also eligible to apply for internships at MassMutual.

  • The Early Participation Program for all sophomores in the Springfield Public Schools. Also through The College Board, all Springfield sophomores take the PSAT. Upon receiving their results, students receive a PIN number to register for My College QuickStart to receive information about improving their SAT scores, potential for success in Advanced Placement classes, and information about careers and colleges. Students have access to this program until they graduate from high school.

  • The MassMutual Academic Achievement Program. Now in its 23rd year, students in grades 10"“12 who achieve a B or better average for four consecutive marking periods are rewarded and recognized for their efforts.
To participate in the free SAT prep program, students must attend the following schools: Springfield Central High School, High School of Commerce, High School of Science and Technology, Putnam Vocational Technical High School, Cathedral High School, Sabis International Charter School, New Leadership Charter School, The MacDuffie School, The Renaissance School, Pioneer Valley Christian School, and the Springfield Academy for Excellence (SAFE) high schools, including Early College High School, Springfield Academy High School, Springfield Recovery High School and Springfield High School.
