Christie's Of London, Auctioned Pete Townshend's Guitar Today To Benefit The Alliance For Sustainability

MINNEAPOLIS,MN. - July 11, 2008 - The Alliance for Sustainability is pleased to announce that Christie's of London successfully auctioned the guitar Pete Townshend used to compose Behind Blue Eyes for The Who for over $27,000 today in London. The auction revenue will be used to to support projects that are ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane throughout the U.S.

The 1960's classical acoustic guitar was owned by Pete Townshend 1967-2000 and used by him to compose Behind Blue Eyes, released on the Who's Next album, 1971 and covered by Limp Bizkit more recently.

The Alliance offers its deep thanks to Pete Townshend of The Who for his help in the successful auction of the guitar to support our nationwide Eco-Municipality campaign. AFS Board member and Treasurer Charlie Crystle, of Lancaster, PA and CEO of Mission Research, donated the guitar "to advance the vital outreach efforts of the Alliance which has been a critically important leader in the sustainability movement in the U.S. for 25 years." A key initiative of the Alliance is to support communities across the country in saving money and achieving health and sustainability as Eco-Municipalities.

The Alliance for Sustainability trains using the Natural Step Framework, and has trained and empowered leaders to create sustainability action plans for cities, counties, universities, hospitals, religious institutions, nonprofits, fortune 500 businesses and small and medium sized businesses across the country. Businesses the Alliance has trained in sustainability include Tennant (NYSE:TNC), American Express (NYSE:AXP), Nielsen Media Research (NYSE:NMR), and Cunningham Group Architects.

The Alliance for Sustainability is currently writing the first ever full municipal sustainability plan in Minnesota for the City of Burnsville with a consortium of nonprofits and businesses in partnership with city staff. The Alliance recently convened more than 300 local government officials, city staff and citizen leaders to learn about model sustainability ordinances and best practices for energy conservation, municipal solar projects, trip reduction, complete streets, low-impact development, storm water management, urban forestry, zero waste and sustainable urban design though a local government sustainability workshop.

The Alliance for Sustainability is celebrating its 25th anniversary and has been one of the original proponents of sustainability, developing a widely used four-part definition. Its mission is to bring about personal, organizational, and planetary sustainability. It has partnered with diverse business, government and non-profit groups to create the CERES Principles, Living Green Expo, Neighborhood Sustainability Conferences, Youth Environmental Activists of Minnesota and Congregations Caring for Creation, as well as numerous public policies.
