"Gee whiz facts" that can add up to big savings

  • FPL encourages customers to take advantage of a free Online
    Home Survey (www.fpl.com/OHES) that offers a personalized,
    in-depth analysis of a home's energy use. Users will receive a
    detailed report and specific ways they can save energy and
    money. FPL estimates that it has been able to avoid the need
    to build 11 power plants since 1982, thanks to its customers'
    conservation efforts.

  • It's the simple things that add up. Did you know that when
    appliances are "off" they may still be consuming electricity
    because of stand-by power? This silent drain of standby power
    is the largest single category of electricity use in American
    homes today. In the average home, 40% of all electricity is
    consumed while home electronic products are turned off. Across
    the U.S., this equals the annual output of 17 power plants.

  • Did you know that the average home spends about $1,900 on
    energy costs every year? Change to appliances that have earned
    the ENERGY STAR, and you can save $80 a year in energy costs,
    while helping preserve the environment. In fact, if just one
    in 10 homes used ENERGY STAR qualified appliances, the result
    would be like planting 1.7 million new acres of trees.

  • Computer monitors account for a big part of a computer's
    energy use, so turning them off when they're not in use can
    lead to considerable savings. In addition, make sure your
    computer is set to go into low-power sleep mode when it's idle
    and turn it off when it's not in use for a long period of

  • Next time you head out to buy a new TV, remember that the
    larger the TV the more energy it uses. In fact, the largest
    TVs can use more energy in a year than home appliances such as
    refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines. ENERGY STAR
    is working on new criteria that will provide consumers with
    annual energy estimates tied to their TV purchases.

  • If every one of FPL's customers replaced one 60 watt bulb with
    a compact fluorescent bulb, each individual would save $55
    over the life of the bulb. Collectively, we'd save the amount
    of energy consumed each year by 20,000 homes.

  • Shopping for a new refrigerator? Think the 'fridge with the
    lowest sales price is your best bet? Not necessarily. If you
    buy the lowest-priced refrigerator, you may end up spending
    more than if you buy a more expensive one. An appliance's
    energy consumption can affect your out-of-pocket costs. You
    may actually save money by buying the more expensive, more
    energy-efficient model. The Federal Trade Commission offers a
    wide range of business and consumer information online at
    www.ftc.gov, including tips on refrigerator purchases!

  • Two thirds of all homes in Florida have leaks in their air
    flow systems. This is a waste of energy and can lead to high
    bills. FPL customers can request a duct test by calling FPL at
    1-800-DIAL-FPL or via www.fpl.com/duct. If leaks are found,
    FPL will provide a list of qualified repair contractors as
    well as a rebate to help cover the cost of the repairs.
