NEW YORK, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of the Alfred Harcourt Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Jovanovich as president, effective immediately. Mr. Jovanovich, who currently serves as chairman, will manage the Foundation's program from its new headquarters in Rye, New York. It is expected that a new chairperson will be appointed in 2009.

The Alfred Harcourt Foundation is devoted to giving four-year college scholarships to under-privileged students. Through close attention and
follow-up with its scholars, the Foundation has enabled thousands of students to graduate college and professional schools.
Mr. Jovanovich has led a distinguished career in the field of scientific, trade and educational publishing. Now retired, he was most recently CEO of Pearson Education, the largest educational publisher in the world, and a director of Pearson plc. Earlier in his career, he was CEO of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc., and president of McGraw-Hill's Educational and Professional Publishing Group. He was a past chairman of the Association of American Publishers.
Jovanovich succeeds Dr. Michael Winston, who served the Foundation as president since 1992. Dr. Winston expanded the Foundation's programs significantly while continuing to focus its mission to serve the disadvantaged.
