Save the Planet and Win Teams up With the Berkeley Daily Planet to Fight Global Warming

BERKELEY, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 03/06/09 -- Save the Planet and Win, a sustainable social network dedicated to raising carbon awareness worldwide, is helping neutralize the carbon footprints of readers of the Berkeley Daily Planet, a free independent newspaper published weekly in Berkeley, California. Starting on February 26, Save the Planet and Win's "Gallon of Gas" Carbon Offset cards are being inserted in 20,000 newspapers every week for two months -- reaching a total of 160,000 Bay Area residents.

The Carbon Offset cards (which are printed on post-consumer recycled paper with eco-friendly water ink) feature a scratch-off promotion with a redemption code. Berkeley Daily Planet readers simply visit the Save the Planet and Win website, enter the redemption code, watch a fun educational animation about carbon awareness, and the Berkeley Daily Planet will offset 19.6 pounds of carbon -- equivalent to the emissions generated when one gallon of gas is burned.

As the very first Voluntary Personal Carbon Registry (VPCR) in the United States, Save the Planet and Win is pushing to make every citizen aware of their carbon footprint and the emissions generated from their day to day activities -- from making multiple car trips to what food they purchase in the grocery store.

The social site is dedicated to promoting a massive cultural shift to a more carbon aware society by transforming carbon calculations from a niche activity for the extreme environmentalist to a fun, tangible, and social activity for all citizens and consumers. Friends, family, co-workers, and others can team up to calculate, monitor, and track the total carbon reductions achieved by their group -- emphasizing the power of the collective in tackling this challenge.

Save the Planet and Win supports a sustainable advertising model where members participate in "Click Green and Win" programs. Each time members click on a promotion, a green sponsor purchases a certain amount of carbon offsets, donates money to urgent social causes, and adds points (which can be redeemed for more carbon offsets or cash) to the member's account. The more sponsored ads watched translates into greater support for carbon offsets and social causes -- and more fun for members.

"Teaming up with progressive brands and organizations like the Berkeley Daily Planet is an excellent way for us to reach a broader base with this vital message of carbon awareness and sustainability," said Ian Wolff, Chief Financial Officer of Save The Planet and Win.

He continued, "More than ever, it's critical to remember that taking care of the environment and our economy are not conflicting goals. Sustainability plays a major role in a sound economy. By making the important work of reducing greenhouse emissions personal, understandable, and fun, Save the Planet and Win gets more people thinking carbon and pushes carbon offsets and green technology into the mainstream."

Global warming is real and we all must be part of the solution. According to the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we need to cut our greenhouse emissions by 20% by the year 2015 and by 85% by the year 2050 to stabilize the Earth's atmosphere and avoid the worst impacts of global warming.

Carbon offsets are critical to a sustainable future and economy. As more carbon offsets are purchased, more money flows to clean technologies and projects -- helping them penetrate the market, generate more green jobs and enable a worldwide shift to a wiser use of resources.
