Hoboken, N.J., August 17 /CSRwire/ - John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (NYSE: JWa and JWb), released its first annual Corporate Citizenship Report to share the progress of its global Corporate Citizenship initiative and establish goals for the coming year. Wiley's inaugural Corporate Citizenship Report was issued as part of its 2009 Annual Report to Shareholders, which can be accessed at www.wiley.com/go/annualreport2009.

Wiley launched this global initiative last year to address its key social, economic, ethical, and environmental challenges; formalize and globalize its policies and strategies; improve its communications; and become more proactive addressing its carbon footprint and supply chain matters. The Company's approach-developed in collaboration with Business for Social Responsibility (www.bsr.org)-a global non-profit member organization-is to measure performance, set realistic targets, and drive change in key areas that can be influenced, as well as build on the Company's social and environmental policies, practices, and programs that already have a positive impact on its stakeholders around the world. Among its accomplishments over the past year, Wiley has:

  • Developed a Vendor Code of Ethical Conduct and established distribution and reporting procedures;
  • Formalized global Responsible Paper Sourcing guidelines;
  • Reduced paper consumption by adopting lighter weight papers and reducing waste, migrating more print subscriptions to online license deals, and taking advantage of digital technologies to deliver content online as well as more efficiently in print;
  • Adopted a company-wide strategy of carbon emissions measurement and reduction;
  • Joined BSR's Clean Cargo Group (www.bsr.org/membership/working-groups/clean-cargo.cfm) to gain access to their intermodal CO2 calculator to compute the carbon emissions of shipments from printers to distribution centers and gathered FY2009 data;
  • Aligned philanthropic activities globally and set up guidelines for charitable giving on a local level;
  • Partnered with Hoboken schools for the seventh year of Wiley's Read Aloud Volunteer Program;
  • Commenced development of focus groups of corporate social responsibility experts, drawn from Wiley's network of authors, researchers, and society contacts, to evaluate priorities;
  • Identified all grassroots Wiley Citizenship groups company-wide to support their efforts;
  • Launched the Wiley Corporate Citizenship Web site at www.wiley.com/go/citizenship.

"By focusing our efforts and making a long-term commitment to steadily introduce and implement changes that are fully integrated into our business strategies, we intend to achieve measurable improvement from year to year," said Steve Smith, Wiley's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, who is leading the initiative. He highlighted the objectives for the coming year, including:

  • Promote its Vendor Code of Ethical Conduct and monitor compliance among compositors, printers, binders, freight companies, paper mills, production, and software vendors around the world;
  • Support paper choices by leveraging resources such as PREPS (Publishers Database for Responsible Environmental Paper Sourcing) and EPAT (Environmental Paper Assessment Tools);
  • Reduce paper use and shipping through new print technologies such as Print On Demand and Ultra Short Run;
  • Set key performance indicators to measure carbon emissions; complete the shipping data collection and develop carbon reduction strategies with measurable targets;
  • Expand Wiley's Volunteer Program to other locations;
  • Coordinate local charitable giving efforts throughout North America, Asia, and Australia;
  • Assess Corporate Citizenship strategies by convening a focus group of global experts;
  • Coordinate grassroots efforts and support local engagement, and recruit local advocates.

Wiley's Corporate Citizenship initiative is supported by the many books it publishes on "green" topics in areas such as architecture and engineering, business and finance, house and home, and technology. These books are included on www.wiley.com.
