"Compact Quarterly" Spotlights Human Rights and Business

(New York, 29 April 2008) "“ The UN Global Compact presents Issue 1, 2008 of the Compact Quarterly, a publication featuring articles, interviews and news on corporate responsibility.

Published in the context of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this Compact Quarterly spotlights the issue of human rights and business: Where does the agenda stand today? What will expectations be in the future? What are companies doing to safeguard human rights within their organizations? Articles include:

  • "Human Rights: Everybody’s business" by Mary Robinson, President, Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative;

  • "Six Questions for John Ruggie: Where is the business and human rights agenda going?" An interview with the UN Special Representative for Business and Human Rights conducted by Ron Popper, Head of Corporate Responsibility at ABB;

  • "A Human Rights and Business Framework" by John Morrison and Kathryn Dovey, Business Leaders Initiative on Human Rights (BLIHR);

  • "Why Are Children’s Rights an Issue for Investors?" by Anne Kvam, Director of Corporate Governance, Norges Bank Investment Management;

  • Short case examples: "Titan: Enabling the differently-abled" and "Sasol: Stepping stones to a system"; and

  • Guidance on "Using Human Rights Tools".

    Other articles in this Compact Quarterly include: "The Future of Corporate Responsibility" by Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, and "ISO & Social Responsibility: Do we need a global guidance standard?", a conversation with Kernaghan Webb, ISO expert, on the need for ISO Social Responsibility guidance, what ISO 26000 hopes to achieve and how it relates to the Global Compact.
