2012: The International Year of the Cooperative
The U.N. General Assembly has declared 2012 as the International Year of the Cooperative. For example, did you know that:
- One billion people are members of cooperatives?
- The 300 largest cooperatives have sales totaling more than $1 trillion per year?
- Cooperative enterprises employ 100 million people worldwide, 20 percent more than multinational enterprises?
According to many, co-ops are not only here to stay, they might just be the next big thing. CSRwire honors the International Year of the Cooperative, with a monthly series highlighting developments in the cooperative movement. This series covers the cooperative movement’s challenges and successes and explores how “Cooperative Capitalism” might provide solutions to the failings of business-as-usual.
