The Aflac Global Investments team is proving that meaningful change often starts with a single step. For the third year in a row, a small group of volunteers from this New York City team has organized a group walk every day as part of Miles for Miracles, raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer and blood disorders treatment and research — this year, walking a total of 9,474 miles and claiming the top spot for amount raised.

What began as a simple idea has quickly turned into a powerful movement of compassion and action. The walk reflects Aflac’s long-standing commitment to children and families affected by cancer and blood disorders. Inspired by the company’s 30-year partnership with the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Global Investments team wanted to find their own way to contribute.

“We manage financial assets every day, but this effort is about investing in something far more important — help for children with cancer and blood disorders,” said Brad Dyslin, executive vice president, global chief investments officer and president of Aflac Global Investments. “Every mile we walk and every dollar we raise through Miles for Miracles brings us closer to a world where no child has to face cancer or a blood disorder.”

The group raised a total of $28,581 during this year’s Miles for Miracles event, bringing their three-year total to more than $61,000 with all proceeds benefiting childhood cancer and blood disorders programs. Beyond the fundraising impact, colleagues have been able to connect in new ways — sharing stories, cheering one another on, and uniting behind a cause bigger than themselves. During his recent visit to their Wall Street office, President of Aflac Incorporated and Aflac U.S. Virgil Miller joined their walk.&nbsp;This daily activity has strengthened bonds across the team and has been a great way to reinforce Aflac’s commitment to wellness.

DALLAS, October 10, 2025&nbsp;/CSRwire/ - On Saturday, October 4th, the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.marykayashfoundation.org/" target="_blank">Mary Kay Ash Foundation®</a> painted the town of Addison pink for the 21st Annual MK5K®&nbsp;event.&nbsp;The pink movement spread from coast to coast through Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants who held their own fundraising events in communities and cities representing nearly every state and territory across the U.S.

Participants could run, walk, bike, or get creative to compete in the annual event that has raised over $250,000 for the Mary Kay Ash Foundation® with fundraising efforts running through October 31st. The Foundation®&nbsp;raises and distributes funds to invest in breakthrough cancer research and clinical trials to find a cure for women-related cancers and also provides annual grants to nonprofits dedicated to ending domestic violence.&nbsp;

Since 1996, the Mary Kay Ash Foundation® has contributed more than&nbsp;$98&nbsp;million&nbsp;to organizations aligned with its two-fold mission. In addition, it supports awareness initiatives, community outreach programs, and advocates for legislation to ensure women are healthy and safe.&nbsp;

In recent years, the rise of virtual “runners” who participate in the event has made a huge impact to the amount of funds raised each year.&nbsp;

Talent Acquisition

At Wesco, we believe that attracting the right talent is critical to our success. In 2024, we continued the evolution of our recruitment processes, partnerships and outreaches, focusing on attracting a workforce with a wealth of ideas, talents, skills, backgrounds and perspectives to our organization.

We automated and optimized processes to enhance the experience for all candidates with an emphasis on speed and communication. We enabled our hiring managers by continuing to improve our sourcing and screening processes to present the most qualified candidates from a range of sources. We continue to develop our talent acquisition team through a variety of internal and external training offerings to build their skills in sourcing and attracting candidates.

Key Talent Management Achievements in 2024

Recruitment Process Optimization: We completed a variety of improvement initiatives to create standardization, consistency and efficiency across several recruitment processes including assessment usage, pay transparency in job postings, evergreen requisitions (a pool of candidates to fill multiple job openings), internal mobility, automated candidate correspondence and more.

Interview and Selection Training Program: We launched a new interview and selection training course for hiring managers to enhance the knowledge and skills of this critical component of a manager’s responsibilities. The training program features an online component followed by a facilitator-led session to reinforce key concepts and to practice interviewing skills.

Enhanced Analytics: We launched a new initiative to automate key talent acquisition reporting dashboards to enable real time access to data, improving our ability to monitor and act on critical steps in the hiring process.

Improved Commitment to sourcing from multiple channels: Our talent acquisition team works with organizations like RecruitMilitary, Out &amp; Equal, the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program and Military Spouse Employment Partnership to ensure we source candidates from multiple channels.

An Enhanced Onboarding Experience

The onboarding experience is a critical first step in an employee’s journey with Wesco. We are committed to ensuring that all new employees feel welcomed, supported and set up for success from day one.

We recognize that onboarding is more than just paperwork, it’s about immersing new hires into the Wesco way of working and giving them the tools they need to be successful. Over the last few years, we’ve invested in building and enhancing our onboarding programs to help new associates acclimate to our organization.

Investments in Our Future

Continuous learning and development are essential to building a high-performing workforce. In 2024, we invested in expanding our Learning and Development (L&amp;D) solutions, introducing more than 5,800 new learning opportunities into our existing offerings.

We also successfully delivered a total of 172,175 hours of training (including safety training) to employees across the globe, at an average rate of 8.4 training hours per employee. These efforts are designed to equip our employees with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to excel in their roles and contribute to Wesco’s ongoing success. Our L&amp;D initiatives are aligned with our broader business strategy, ensuring that employees at all levels are provided with opportunities for professional growth.

Talent Development: Our seasoned L&amp;D professionals have the deep expertise in adult learning and instructional design needed to create engaging, high-impact training experiences.

If you’re taking a GLP-1 hormone medication like Ozempic, Wegovy, Victoza, or Mounjaro (or a <a href="https://www.fda.gov/drugs/guidance-compliance-regulatory-information/human-drug-compounding" target="_blank">compounded version</a>), you already know its positive effects. Decreasing your appetite, calming cravings, reducing “<a href="https://guidingstars.com/health-and-wellness/food-noise/">food noise</a>,” and helping you feel full. Simply put, the medication makes it easier to lose weight because you’re not hungry very often. Unfortunately, these medications are not without side effects, such as nausea and stomach discomfort.&nbsp;So is there an alternative—is it possible that eating certain foods can deliver similar benefits without the downsides?

What Does GLP-1 Do?

GLP-1 is an acronym that stands for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1. We all have the GLP-1 hormone in our bodies. It’s primarily produced in the intestines, pancreas, and hypothalamus area of the brain. And taking a GLP-1 medication increases the amount of the hormone in your body.&nbsp;

GLP-1 levels naturally rise and fall in response to eating. When food enters the gastrointestinal system, GLP-1 releases as part of the body’s mechanism to help us moderate food intake. It’s a signal to tell us to slow down now that food has arrived on the scene. GLP-1’s combined effects help promote satiety, and include:&nbsp;&nbsp;

<ul>
	<li>Slowing gastric emptying</li>
	<li>Decreasing food cravings and desire for alcohol</li>
	<li>Improving blood sugar control, especially for people with type-2 diabetes</li>
	<li>Reducing appetite</li>
</ul>

What Foods Help Increase the GLP-1 Hormone?

<a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8235588/" target="_blank">Studies suggest that certain types of foods</a> can stimulate the release of GLP-1 and other appetite-regulating hormones. They are proven to help promote fullness and even potentially help with weight loss. And the use of food to support GLP-1 minimizes the potential adverse side effects that typically come with GLP-1 medications.

High-Fiber Foods

Many GLP-1-secreting cells are located toward the end of the intestines. Foods with ample fiber reach the lower intestine more readily than other foods because they don’t digest as quickly. Soluble fiber directly stimulates release of the GLP-1 hormone. And insoluble fiber can also help by supporting satiety and contributing to a healthy gut environment. All plant foods contain fiber—in general, the more fruits and veggies you eat, the better for your health overall. Good sources of soluble fiber include oats, beans, peas, barley, bananas, ground flax, nuts, and chia seeds.

Protein Foods

When we eat foods with protein, the digestion process breaks the proteins down into units called peptides and amino acids. <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8634310/" target="_blank">Some peptides and amino acids trigger the release of GLP-1</a> in the intestines. Proteins take a while to digest, and therefore reach those GLP-1-secreting cells that are further along in the intestinal tract. <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32929230/" target="_blank">Research also suggests</a> that certain peptides help extend the biological activity of GLP-1, essentially keeping it around longer. Protein is already considered the most satiating of all the macronutrients and is often linked with weight loss. It also increases other satiety hormones in the body, so it’s a wise choice when you’re pursuing weight management.

Both animal protein and <a href="https://guidingstars.com/our-dietitian/plant-based-proteins-roundup/" target="_blank">plant-based protein sources</a> can impact GLP-1. Our advice: choose lean proteins such as <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0308814620310505" target="_blank">eggs and egg whites,</a> which show potential for positive effects in some studies. Low-fat dairy products are good options as well—they deliver protein, and their calcium can enhance GLP-1 too. And protein shakes, fish, and seafood are always good choices for lean protein. Among plant-based proteins, soy protein shows GLP-1-enhancing effects and there are many ways to <a href="https://guidingstars.com/recipe-roundup/celebrating-soy/" target="_blank">incorporate soy protein into meals</a>. Other <a href="https://guidingstars.com/nutrition-science/what-are-the-pros-of-plant-based-eating/" target="_blank">plant-based protein-containing foods</a> like nuts, pulses, beans, and certain grains are also a-ok, and have the advantage of providing fiber as well as protein. Overall though, it’s more about getting protein throughout the day—and less about exactly which foods provide it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Foods Rich in Monounsaturated Fats

Numerous <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10357731/">studies</a> indicate that <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11181530/" target="_blank">monounsaturated fatty acids trigger GLP-1 release</a>. Many of these studies tested with olive oil, but other oils are also good sources of this healthy fat. Avocado oil, safflower oil, canola oil, peanut oil, and sesame oil, to name a few. Plus, there are foods that contain <a href="https://guidingstars.com/health-and-wellness/a-quick-guide-to-heart-smart-fats/">monounsaturated fats</a>. Almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds (as well as nut and seed butters made from them), and avocados. Whenever possible, use monounsaturated oils instead of less-healthy saturated fats to help boost GLP-1 levels and keep your heart happy.

The global digital transformation is reshaping the automotive industry, and at the center of this shift is the&nbsp;software-defined vehicle (SDV). While the concept is not entirely new, it has rapidly gained momentum and is redefining how vehicles are designed, built, and experienced.

The Software-Defined Vehicle: More Than Just a Buzzword

Think of SDVs as smartphones on wheels: always connected, ready for the next update, and full of apps and features!

A software-defined vehicle is one whose features and functions are primarily based on software. The transition from traditional vehicles to SDVs involves decoupling software from hardware and establishing a layered, zonal architecture, creating vehicles that are safer, more intelligent, connected, and field upgradable. This enables continuous improvements via&nbsp;over-the-air (OTA)&nbsp;updates, real-time data integration, and a more personalized, intelligent driving experience — a car that feels more like a smartphone than a heavy machine.

From Hardware to Software: The New Automotive Paradigm 
Traditionally, vehicles have been hardware-centric machines. Innovation was driven by mechanical engineering, with software playing a supporting role, often locked into individual Electronic Control Units (ECU) with limited flexibility.

The SDV flips this model. Today, most vehicle functions, from infotainment to driving dynamics, are enabled, controlled, and continuously updated through software. This is made possible by a modular and zonal architecture that decouples software from hardware.

In essence, a software-defined vehicle is characterized by:

<ul>
	<li>A zonal architecture with centralized computing, typically featuring one or two high-performance computers (HPCs) that replace the large number of traditional ECUs. Zonal gateways complement this setup by integrating multiple physical and virtual ECUs at the edge.</li>
	<li>Modular software stacks &nbsp;allowing for faster innovation on scalable and flexible platforms enabling new features to be added over time.</li>
	<li>Extended connectivity including 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi 7, UWB and planning for NTN and 6G enabling always connected and broadband access.</li>
	<li>OTA updates &nbsp;delivering new features and bug fixes and security updates that will improve the user experience.</li>
	<li>Cloud backend integration &nbsp;enabling real-time data and services with the large amount of data gathered.</li>
	<li>New sets of functions and features, including AI, are transforming the car into a digital experience space.</li>
</ul>

This transformation not only drives technological progress, but it also unlocks entirely new business models and ecosystems. Automakers and partners can create ongoing revenue streams, build new customer touchpoints, and extend the vehicle lifecycle far beyond the point of sale. 
 
The Race Is On 
SDVs are no longer a futuristic concept, they’re already here. Leading original equipment manufacturers (OEM) are investing heavily in software platforms, cloud infrastructure, and next-generation vehicle architecture as well as embedded AI computing capabilities. At the same time, new companies are entering the automotive space with bold ambitions and fresh perspectives. The result is a race to redefine what a vehicle is and what it can become.

The SDV is not just a new type of car. It represents a fundamental shift in how we think about mobility, innovation, and customer engagement. For those ready to lead, the opportunities are vast.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career journey to date.

My name is Otaro Alaka. I am a Nigerian American who grew up in Houston, Texas. Before joining GoDaddy, I was a professional athlete, playing for both the Baltimore Ravens and the Arlington Renegades. My time in the NFL was riddled with injuries so I had to make the difficult decision to close that chapter and begin exploring opportunities beyond football.

What attracted you to join GoDaddy?

The opportunity to work for a company like GoDaddy felt like a no brainer. A global tech company with 20 million customers worldwide seemed like a great landing spot for me. Getting to learn from and interact with the people here aligned with my goals to expand my technical knowledge while exploring a career that I have become passionate about.

That is what excited me the most about joining GoDaddy.

Are there any unexpected ways in which your sports background helps you in Customer Care?

Many of the skills and habits that I developed through my sports background have proven highly transferable in my professional life. It can be pretty easy to get overwhelmed and discouraged with the amount of information and tools that are needed to do this job effectively. However, my attitude and approach helped keep me on track and gave me the edge I needed to succeed. That attitude and approach came from 20 years of playing football.

How do you stay motivated and disciplined in your learning journey?

For me, its all about patience and consistency. Staying committed to your goals is crucial, even when you're not seeing instant results. It's all a part of the process. What's most important is that you show up everyday with a positive mindset, an eagerness to learn, and a hunger to get better every day.

What advice would you give to athletes considering a career beyond sports?

I would tell them they already have everything they need. Learning something new takes time and there will be growing pains. The intangibles that were required to play your sport will be the keys to success in the career you choose.

Coinciding with Climate Week NYC 2025, Forbes recently named FedEx chief sustainability officer and vice president of Environmental Affairs, Karen Blanks Ellis, to the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/elisabethbrier/2025/09/18/forbes-sustainability-leaders-2025/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">2025 Forbes Sustainability Leaders</a> list, recognizing her leadership of the sustainability strategy for the world’s largest express transportation company.

Blanks Ellis is one of fifty individuals recognized by Forbes on this year’s list, which includes environmental ministers, climate tech entrepreneurs, globally recognized activists, and non-profit and private sector leaders. According to Forbes, the list celebrates leaders who are “defining what climate leadership looks like today” and whose “recent achievements prove that meaningful climate progress is happening now.”

In recognizing Blanks Ellis and FedEx, Forbes highlighted the company’s goal of carbon neutral operations by 2040, as well as the company’s 6.1% year-over-year reduction in direct (Scope 1) emissions. Blanks Ellis attributed this decrease in emissions in large part to aircraft modernization and fuel conservation efforts—initiatives that also enabled the company to save $400 million in jet fuel costs in FY 2024.

Advancing an “all of the above” approach to aviation sustainability

Blanks Ellis’ <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/forbes-magazine_karen-blanks-ellis-at-the-forbes-sustainability-activity-7375985500429660161-bD6_?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAuqGjABKsAstJB1hHbhhCEnbSeSIVn-t78" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Forbes recognition</a> coincided with FedEx participation in other events at Climate Week NYC, where FedEx convened discussions with customers, civil society, and scientific experts aimed at scaling solutions and identifying shared barriers to progress.

FedEx convened a roundtable with Foreign Policy that brought together experts from science, policy, finance, and business to explore how to scale existing—<a href="https://fpanalytics.foreignpolicy.com/2025/09/08/nature-based-carbon-dioxide-removal/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">yet still emerging</a>—natural carbon removal techniques. Additionally, Blanks Ellis <a href="https://foreignpolicy.com/events/energy-forum-at-unga80/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">joined Foreign Policy</a> and aviation leaders on stage to advocate for a full suite of solutions to help the global aviation industry reach its sustainability goals: increased production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), air traffic control improvements, more energy-efficient aviation technology, and the adoption of a global framework for international aviation emissions management.

Climate Week NYC Q&amp;A with Karen Blanks Ellis, Chief Sustainability Officer and VP of Environmental Affairs, FedEx

Q: Karen, this was your first time attending Climate Week NYC—and you kicked it off by being named to the 2025 Forbes Sustainability Leaders list. What are your takeaways having met with some of your fellow honorees during the week?

Karen Blanks Ellis: It’s certainly an honor, and I’m grateful, but the truth is everything we do in this space is collaborative. I have the privilege of working alongside teams at FedEx who are focused on finding practical solutions across our business—like our air operations team members identifying creative fuel conservation opportunities, or our procurement and finance teams helping us execute our sustainability strategy in line with the needs of the business. More than anything, I am coming away from this week energized from learning from my CSO peers, our customers, and FedEx nonprofit partners who are all committed to advancing this important work.

Q: How are you assessing the next steps in the company’s sustainability strategy, especially in a time of transformation for the company and the industry? How do you see the sustainability strategy and the business strategy reinforcing each other at FedEx?

KBE: It is a pivotal time for FedEx and for corporate sustainability. Since 2022, we have been undergoing the largest transformation in our company’s history. We are working to improve network efficiency, modernize our systems, and harness the insights from the rich amount of data we have from operating our extensive global network. Sustainability is a natural complement and further ensures that we are building for the long term.

FedEx is relatively unique in the transportation industry in that we own many of the assets in our network, so addressing our direct emissions is a core focus of our sustainability strategy. The progress we make in that area is meaningful—both for our own business as well as for our customers. What we do within our network is ultimately in service to our customers; our Scope 1 direct emissions show up in their own carbon accounting as their Scope 3 value chain emissions.

Q: Carbon removal was a prominent theme of your Climate Week--what role do nature-based carbon capture solutions play in the long-term strategy for FedEx?

KBE: The scientific consensus is clear: achieving climate objectives requires carbon removals. While decarbonizing our operations remains the priority as we work towards our goal of carbon neutral global operations by 2040, residual emissions will persist—especially in aviation.

Through the vision of our late founder, Fred Smith, the $100M investment by FedEx to help establish the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture has already advanced the scientific body of work on carbon capture methods like enhanced weathering—a geological technique accelerates the chemistry of the Earth’s natural carbon cycle by placing basalt rock on agricultural fields. But beyond that, I get most excited by the fact that enhanced weathering can benefit farmers by improving soil health, increasing crop yields, and providing them with a new revenue stream.

But there will not be sufficient quality carbon removals available to meet the needs of hard-to-abate industries like ours if we don’t work collectively to scale up the market. That’s why FedEx convened a group of potential corporate buyers, project developers, financial institutions, policy influencers, and standard-setters during Climate Week for an honest discussion about what needs to happen next. We know that science will continue to evolve. But we already know enough about these techniques to build greater public understanding and to scale up the amount of excess carbon removed using them.
