The report - "Forward" - details Westpac’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance over 2008 against over 110 performance indicators, and represents a comprehensive, independently assured account of Westpac’s progress against non-financial objectives.
Highlights for 2008 include: The launch of the Westpac Climate Change Strategy including targets for energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions;
The success of Westpac Assist supporting customers with estimated total loan facilities of $1.2bn, and launch of Financial Next Steps, a follow-up course to Financial First Steps, to improve financial capability;
The rollout of the sustainable supply chain management Code of Conduct for the bank’s suppliers. The Code was developed in consultation with suppliers and other internal and external stakeholders and sees Westpac extend its approach through the value chain; and
Westpac Australia’s People team piloted an organisational mentoring program with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Westpac continues to use the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 framework and Financial Sector Supplement as the guiding framework. As in previous years, both the report and Westpac’s underlying policies, systems and processes have been independently tested applying the AA1000 Assurance Standard.
Westpac was founded in 1817 and was the first company and the first bank established in Australia. Westpac is one of the major banking and financial services organisation throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region, and provide a broad range of banking and financial services in these markets. BT Financial Group has been helping Australians create and manage wealth since 1969 and has been part of the Westpac Group since 2002. Westpac merged with the St.George Bank in December 2008.
