When reflecting on the 163 year legacy of Bacardi, one word comes to mind for Rachel Dorion Guerin, Heritage Curator and sixth generation Bacardi family member: pride. 

As the guardian of the treasured Bacardi Archives, Rachel preserves and protects more than 20,000 artefacts from the seven generations of her family and the company. Each rum bottle, photograph and document showcases a special moment in history, from BACARDÍ rum’s humble origins in a small tin-roofed distillery on February 4, 1862, the brands first gold medals won at World Fairs, the rise of BACARDÍ during the Golden Age of Cocktails and Prohibition, exile from Cuba, and beyond. 

In this exclusive TODAY Show ‘Behind the Brand’ segment, journey through Bacardi history with Rachel and NBC Correspondent Sam Brock as she shares the origins of her great, great, great grandfather Don Facundo Bacardí Massó and his revolutionary rum brand, the symbolism behind the striking bat logo, and moments from the brand history that set Bacardi on course to become the world’s largest privately held spirits company.
