2020 Vinyl Recycler of the Year

The Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC), a self-funded business council advancing sustainability in the vinyl industry, has issued a call for award nominations for its annual “Vinyl Recycler of the Year” Award, to be presented at the council’s virtual annual meeting, in December.

“Recycling and landfill diversion is a key component of the vinyl industry’s sustainability strategy,” said Jay Thomas, Vinyl Sustainability Council Executive Director. “Currently, the vinyl industry recycles more than 1 billion pounds of material annually in the U.S. and Canada, and it’s important that we recognize the vinyl recyclers who are making strides in waste reduction and contributing to this accomplishment.”

The Vinyl Recycler of the Year Award recognizes the efforts of recyclers and product manufacturers with operations in the U.S. that find new solutions and/or markets for post-consumer polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials, increase use of recycled vinyl content in their products, and/or engage in partnerships with companies in take-back programs.

In 2019, the VSC presented Return Polymers with the Vinyl Recycler of the Year Award for a custom compound the company created on a customer’s behalf. Return Polymers was able to develop a 100 percent recycled vinyl compound capable of being extruded into complex refrigeration equipment profiles on either single or twin screw extruders. Over 18 months, some 500,000 pounds of reclaimed vinyl materials were diverted from the landfill into this application.

To be eligible for the Vinyl Recycler of the Year Award, organizations must:

  • Be a vinyl recycler or vinyl product manufacturers with operations in the U.S.
  • Have implemented their product or program within the last 18 months (Jan. 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020)

The Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC) is a voluntary membership organization that is taking a leadership role in uniting the industry to advance sustainable performance throughout the vinyl value chain.

The VSC created +Vantage Viny® as a voluntary initiative to advance the U.S. vinyl industry’s contribution to sustainable development. It aims to drive continuous improvement across all three sectors of sustainability – environmental, social and economic performance.

Individual company commitments are aligned with voluntary industry sustainability targets that were developed as a result of a materiality assessment. This analysis identified three impact categories, resource efficiency, health & safety and emissions that were aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

An independent verification process provides assurance of achievement of company commitments. Verified companies are awarded the right to use the +Vantage Vinyl trademark as evidence of their commitment to advancing sustainability in the vinyl industry.
