Cool Effect, a Bay Area based 501(c)3 non-profit fighting the climate crisis, today announces its support of a new carbon reduction project, a Solar DC Programme located in off-grid rural regions of India. A standout example of Cool Effect’s commitment to scientific integrity and disciplined approach to identifying projects with true carbon benefit, the Solar DC Programme replaces inefficient fossil fuel such as kerosene with a rooftop solar panel program.

The project is providing 40,000 rural households with access to clean renewable energy. Affordable and reliable power is limited in India -- over fifty million residents live off the grid and half of Indian homes are unable to afford even subsidized electricity. Using proceeds from selling carbon offsets through Cool Effect, this innovative and award-winning Direct Current (DC) system created by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, now generates electricity for rural regions in a planet-friendly way. Families benefit from clean energy for light for reading and studying after dark and the fans that help cool homes and keep dengue bearing mosquitos at bay.

As expressed through its commitment to Carbon Done Correctly, Cool Effect has chosen to support the project on its platform following a rigorous vetting, evaluation and selection process, led by Sid Yadav, Director of Project Research for Cool Effect.

“This new project exemplifies Cool Effect’s continued commitment to scientific integrity and full transparency. Many projects are often unable to expand or survive due to lack of resources or support, and Cool Effect’s efforts ensure that high-quality projects across the globe overcome that challenge,” said Yadav, who also oversees ongoing project monitoring and on-site evaluations to ensure projects continue to meet Cool Effect’s high standards. “When traveling to India to see this project, I was able to both confirm the scientific merits, and be exposed first-hand to the profound impact that access to clean, renewable energy provides these rural communities. My role at Cool Effect is so much greater than fighting climate change; it’s helping communities across the globe prosper in sustainable living conditions.”

Yadav has devoted his entire professional career to fighting climate change, and has evaluated more than 1,500 carbon mitigation projects, personally visiting over 250 of those in over 50 countries. His passion, expertise and commitment continues to inform and drive Cool Effect’s disciplined approach when selecting projects. To-date, only 24 projects have ultimately earned the support of Cool Effect.

“We feature new projects on a limited basis due to an incredibly stringent review process that we adhere to as part of our commitment to Carbon Done Correctly and efforts to support only the highest quality carbon mitigation projects. We’re thrilled to support the Solar DC Programme and help these rural communities most in need succeed, all while reducing global carbon emissions,” noted Cool Effect Co-Founder Dee Lawrence.
