SCS Global Services Now Certifies Mills and Forest Product Manufacturers to SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard

SCS Global Services today announced its accreditation to perform audits under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) Fiber Sourcing Standard. This standard is a leading, credible certification in North America that governs how SFI-certified organizations procure fiber from non-certified forestland. It is specifically geared toward organizations in the United States and Canada seeking to verify that the wood they purchase from forests, domestically or globally, is legally and responsibly sourced.

“About 90% of the world’s forests are not certified, so strong mechanisms must exist to promote responsible procurement from these lands,” said Kathy Abusow, President and CEO, SFI. “SFI Fiber Sourcing certification encourages the spread of responsible forestry practices. We are delighted to have SCS as a third-party certification body with their extensive experience in the responsible forestry sector.”

“With nearly 30 years of experience in the certification of forestry practices, we are pleased to be able to add SFI Fiber Sourcing certification to our suite of services, which most recently includes SFI Chain of Custody certification,” said Brendan Grady, SCS Director of Forest Management Certification. “Our aim is to provide services that benefit our clients in their markets, and to provide the options their supply chains demand. With the addition of this service, we will continue to uphold our high level of integrity, friendly and knowledgeable customer support, and dedication to fair and objective audits.”

The Standard (2015-2019 Standards and Rules®, Section 3 – Fiber Sourcing) includes measures to broaden the practice of biodiversity, use best management practices to protect water quality, provide outreach to landowners, and use the services of forest management and harvesting professionals.
