Building on their strategic partnership announced in 2018, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and HPD Collaborative (HPDC) are announcing new capabilities for advancing and scaling the practice of transparent material health in the building industry.  These new capabilities improve education and information tools to make product transparency more meaningful and transformative – enabling project teams and manufacturers to earn LEED v4.1 material transparency and optimization credits with ease. 

“Manufacturers are now providing transparency reports covering over 20,000 products, which are readily available to architecture and design teams with web-based, public libraries.  And, manufacturers are expanding the number of disclosed products on almost a daily basis.  The new tools we are announcing make it even easier for architects and designers to use the Material Ingredients credit in LEED v4.1 to recognize their healthier product selection efforts,” commented Wendy Vittori, Executive Director of HPDC.

Resources from all Material Ingredients credit partners (BIFMA, Clean Production Action, Cradle to Cradle, ILFI, UL, Global GreenTag, and more) are all included in the new resource.  A project team can now find in one convenient web location the how-to resources they need to obtain the LEED Material Ingredients credit for all programs that participate in the credit. 

Newly announced capabilities include:

• Educational offerings that make achieving the LEED v4.1 Material Ingredients credit simple and efficient. Whether you’re an expert looking to dive deep, or a new team member simply trying to find compliant products, the Material Health Education Roadmap will point you to the resources you need.

• Educational “badges” that enable project team members to earn an industry-recognized credential in Material Health competency.

• Documentation integration between the HPD Public Repository and LEED Online simplifying project team workflow, available in early 2020.

“Significant progress has been made in simplifying the use of the Material Ingredients LEED credit,” said Wes Sullens, Director, LEED, USGBC.  “The streamlining of the Material Ingredients credit language introduced in LEED v4.1 has resulted in a much greater level of utilization of this credit.  We are also introducing other resources, such as the Better Materials initiative, which is focused on making Material Resources credits very attainable for every LEED project.
