Keep America Beautiful Launches #Beautiful4th to Encourage Consumer Responsibility on Independence Day

Celebrate a #Beautiful4th with Keep America Beautiful by keeping our beaches, parks, and picnics litter-free.

Happy Birthday, America! Independence Day is synonymous with fireworks, BBQs, and trips to the beach celebrating with family and friends. This year, national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful® is launching the #Beautiful4th campaign to encourage those partaking in July 4th activities to celebrate responsibly by cleaning up after themselves, or even engaging in broader cleanup activities. The campaign will launch on July 1 and run through July 7. Participants can submit their social content using the hashtag #Beautiful4th.

On holidays, people often neglect the ‘leave no footprint’ mentality. This year, through #Beautiful4th, Keep America Beautiful is encouraging holiday celebrators to change their littering behaviors. The source of most litter at parks, beaches and open areas where people congregate for leisure activities is pedestrians – 98.5%. Small items, which represent about half of the litter, are most often cigarette butts and candy and confection packaging, while larger litter is mostly food related.

“We are challenging all Americans to take part in the campaign and share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #Beautiful4th,” said Helen Lowman, President and CEO, Keep America Beautiful. “From coast to coast, we’d love to see how people are celebrating cleanly and even taking the next step to organize a cleanup effort.”

Keep America Beautiful and its more than 600 community-based affiliates strive to inspire and educate people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. For more than six decades, Keep America Beautiful has served as the country’s nonprofit steward in litter prevention. Litter is more than just a blight on our landscape; it is costly to clean up, impacts our quality of life and economic development, and eventually ends up in our waterways and oceans.
