How To Build A Purpose-Driven Company

Oliver Russell announced today it is publishing a three-part white paper series called “How to Build a Purpose-Driven Company,” the first installment of which can now be found on the company’s website.

“We’ve been privileged to build brands for a number of successful entrepreneurs who are creating companies to develop products, services or business models that benefit society,” said Russ Stoddard, Oliver Russell founder and CEO. “We’ve gained considerable experience and decided the best way to help other purpose-driven companies is to share the lessons we’ve learned.”

The first white paper this series, “Create It,” was published today. This critical, formative stage defines the concept, then walks through the process of building a strong foundation for purpose in a company, including values development, screens for business practices, charting the corporate purpose, and developing a manifesto.

The second white paper, “Prove It,” will be published later this year. It provides a blueprint for tying your company’s belief system to a framework that translates words and beliefs into intentional, measurable action—the all-important “proof.” It covers third-party assessment platforms and verification programs that help companies measure and demonstrate their environmental and social impact.

The last white paper in the series is “Share It.” This will provide a template and tools for how a purpose-driven company can use its positioning as a competitive advantage to differentiate its offering, connect with (and learn from) like-minded companies, attract key influencers, and build prosperous relationships with both customers and employees, all through the power of purpose and aligned values.

Stoddard says the white paper series should help propel growth in startups that are adopting a purpose-driven model to compete in the marketplace to deliver both financial profit and a public benefit. “Many of today’s entrepreneurs aren’t satisfied with bolting on a cause marketing campaign or producing a corporate sustainability report after they’ve succeeded; they’re taking control from the start, creating public benefit corporations and building purpose into their business plans.”
