Office Expansion, Assessed by SCS Global Services, Earns Forest Stewardship Council(R) Project Certification
Submitted by SCS Global Services
(Marketwired) -GreenWood Resources (GWR), a global investment and timber management company, has received the seventh U.S.-based Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Project Certification for its headquarters office expansion, assessed by third-party auditor, SCS Global Services (SCS). All of the timber and wood products used in this project have earned FSC certification. At least 50% of the wood has been certified to the elevated FSC standards, FSC-100%, FSC-Mix, or FSC Post-Consumer Reclaimed, a threshold rarely achieved in green building construction projects.
"GreenWood Resources' accomplishment shows true leadership in the building industry, demonstrating that responsibly grown, certified wood can be scalable in large projects," said Robert J. Hrubes, SCS Executive Vice President. "SCS helped ensure that every step of production and sourcing in this project met the rigorous standards of FSC, from plantation forest management to milling and on-site installation."
GWR's Portland, Oregon office expansion included the construction of 34 new workspaces, conference room and reception facilities, which incorporated Collins Pacific Albus(R) lumber and veneer products, and 130 sheets of Columbia Forest Products' (Columbia) PureBond(R) MPX(R) decorative plywood panels. The MPX panels featured hybrid poplar cross bands and veneer, cut from Pacific Albus(R) lumber. All hybrid poplar products used in the office expansion were processed from GWR's GreenWood Tree Farm Fund (GTFF) plantation trees, which grew to harvestable dimensions in only 12 years. The GTFF tree farm also earned Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) certification by SCS, which represents the first-ever dual FSC and RSB certification.
"To have an office showcasing the products sourced from our responsibly managed tree farms has been a dream of mine since I started GWR," said Jeff Nuss, President and CEO of GWR. "We and our manufacturing partners understand the value and beauty that exists in products made from this incredible renewable resource called wood. We are equally proud of our commitment to responsible management of our tree farms and of the Pacific Albus(R) products utilized throughout our office expansion. We believe it is best to lead by example and we welcome others to come see and consider what possibilities exist for themselves."
"GreenWood Resources highlighted the great attributes that make FSC 100% Pacific Albus(R) ideal in any office setting," said Lee Jimerson, Collins Product Manager. "The 9Wood EcoGrille wood ceilings are reflective, which equates to superior indoor light quality. The office furniture, made with Pacific Albus(R) plywood and lumber, is light in color and warm to the touch, making for very comfortable work spaces."
Columbia's MPX(R) plywood panels, Collins Pacific Albus(R) and 9Wood EcoGrille products can contribute to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) V4 credits for resource conservation and for reduced emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Tim Schallich, VP Resources at Columbia, added, "It is gratifying to see this contemporary use of wood in wall panels, casework, acoustic and visual treatments knowing the trees used to produce these products are sustainable and will be regrown and harvested again in just 12 years."
