WASHINGTON, Jun. 24 /CSRwire/ - Over the past 25 years, the United States has played a leading role in one of the world’s most remarkable success stories: unprecedented progress to prevent the deaths of millions of children. This year, more than 100 organizations joined forces as part of the 5th Birthday and Beyond campaign to demonstrate support for the United States’ long-standing commitment to the world’s children. GHC is proud to serve as a host committee member, along with other members, who agreed to make or reaffirm their commitment to child health and child survival past their fifth birthday.

“Today we are celebrating the fact that the number of annual deaths of children under five has fallen dramatically, to less than 7 million per year,” stated Dr. Christine Sow, Executive Director, GHC. “This progress was made possible thanks to high level commitments and diverse partnerships mobilizing governments, civil society and private sector in support of healthy children and families.”

GHC is pleased to announce that they will collect commitments to child health and survival from each host committee member. These organizations have made commitments that showcase how they contribute to child survival, a distinctive characteristic of their work with children, and their goals and objectives for child health and survival through 2015 and beyond. So far, GHC collected more than 40 commitments.

Some examples of organizational commitments include the following:

  • Providing training and technical assistance designed to ensure child survival and prevent birth asphyxia.
  • Delivering vaccines to children in the poorest countries.
  • Building and upgrading homes with low-income families through various programs.
  • Empowering health workers and ensuring that they have the skills and tools needed to care for the specific needs of children.

Show support:

  • Using the hashtag #5thBDay in tweets and retweeting posts from GHC and the campaign increases visibility.
