The Advisory Committee on Participatory Democracy (ACPD) has selected MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) to receive the National Association of Secretaries of State’s (NASS) Medallion Award, an annual award created to recognize individuals, groups and organizations with an established record of service to the community. As one of the recipients for this year’s award, MGM Resorts is being recognized for its charitable contributions to community organizations through philanthropy and volunteerism.

“The individuals and organizations chosen for this award exhibit a dedication to supporting the community which is worthy of our applause,” said Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller, who serves as NASS president and is a member of the ACPD. “We thank MGM Resorts for its unwavering leadership in philanthropy and volunteerism, which has helped to improve the quality of life for so many in our state.”

The NASS Medallion Award is presented by individual Secretaries of State in their respective jurisdictions to recognize community service efforts consistent with the NASS mission. Secretary Miller will honor MGM Resorts, the first gaming company in Nevada to receive the award, during a ceremony at the Nevada Legislature on Democracy Day, tomorrow, May 23rd.

“As Nevada’s largest private employer, we consider it a business imperative to lead—not only in entertainment and hospitality—but also in community engagement,” said Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International. “We truly count it an honor to receive the NASS Medallion Award and applaud the other recipients for their extraordinary contributions to this great state.”

MGM Resorts has shown a powerful commitment to the fundamental principles of philanthropy and volunteerism from the beginning. Since its inception in 2002, The MGM Resorts Foundation has donated nearly $50 million to nonprofit organizations serving the community. Additional milestones for the Company’s community engagement programs include:

  • In 2012, 96 employee-funded MGM Resorts foundation grants provided education support to 53,804 children; food, housing and self-sufficiency assistance to 111,746 individuals and families; and vital assistance such as medical care and mental health counseling to 9,847 individuals and families.
  • In 2012, Company employees logged more than 113,000 hours of volunteer service to help more than 850 nonprofit agencies meet community needs.
  • MGM Resorts’ donation in 2012 of more than 378,000 pounds of canned food to Three Square, the leading Las Vegas food bank, earned the distinction of the largest single company donation in the nonprofit’s history.
