Nominate the Best! Apply for the Citizens Awards

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) today called for nominations for its annual Corporate Citizenship Awards, which recognize businesses for positively impacting society through social and environmental programs.

“Every year the Citizens Awards nominations we receive reaffirm what we’ve known all along–that business is part of the solution,” said U.S. Chamber Foundation Executive Vice President Alfonso Martinez-Fonts. “The nominees commit their resources, expertise, and capital to solve societal challenges and make a positive environmental impact.”

For 14 years, the Citizens Awards have recognized some of the most accomplished social and community initiatives within the business sector. Dozens of industry leaders, including Abbott, Best Buy, Cargill, Chevron, Deloitte, UPS, and Wegmans, have been recognized for their outstanding contributions in addressing some of society’s greatest needs

This year, six program awards will honor businesses for specific strategic initiatives: Best Commitment to Education Program; Best Community Improvement Program; Best Disaster Response and Community Resilience Program; Best Economic Empowerment Program; Best Environmental Stewardship Program; and Best Health and Wellness Program. Additionally, the Best Partnership Award will be given to the “people’s choice” for best business and non-profit partnership, and the Best Corporate Steward award will honor one business for an exceptional overall citizenship portfolio.

The nomination process is open to a business or industry association of any size that is a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce or accredited local and state chambers of commerce. Each category comes with its own criteria and measurement system. Full details are available here.

Nominations will be accepted until May 31, 2013, at 05:00 EDT. An external review committee is appointed to review the applicants in each category and to determine the three nominations that make it to the final round. Finalists will be announced on September 17 and then judged by another external judging panel, which will ultimately decide each category’s winner. Winners will then be announced at the Citizens’ Awards gala on November 21 in Washington, D.C.
