Participants included environmental managers, sustainability specialists, and strategic development professionals from a wide range of business sectors.

Nikos Avlonas, President and Founder of CSE, served as the lead facilitator for the training which covered such robust topics as greenhouse gas emissions accounting and reporting, climate change regulations, and understanding the carbon footprint process for businesses and operations.

On the second day of training, guest speaker Menno Enters, Director of Energy and Sustainability at Walgreens, announced his company’s plan to build the nation’s first net zero energy retail store, which will produce energy equal or greater to what is consumes. The LEED Platinum building will include an array of solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal heating & cooling, and carbon dioxide refrigeration. As Menno explained, the net zero project is one of several sustainability initiatives that Walgreens is operating. “We hope to learn from this store and incorporate elements from it into other stores.”

Other guest speakers included sustainability pioneer Dr. George Nassos, and green buildings expert George Vavaroutsos.
