A major environmental protection initiative supported by Coca-Cola Hellenic Romania has received a €1 million grant from the European Union.

The funding has been awarded to the Tasuleasa Social Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), which has been a strategic partner of Coca-Cola Hellenic Romania since 2007. It will be used to develop a management plan for the Calimani National Park, which is situated in the same region as Coca-Cola Hellenic Romania’s mineral water operations.

Key elements of the management plan include protecting biodiversity, strengthening institutional management capabilities, and providing educational programmes for local people.

Ulrike Gehmacher, Public Affairs and Communication Manager, Coca-Cola Hellenic said: “Collaborating with partners is a key component of our Towards Sustainability strategy. We are thrilled that the European Union has recognised the valuable work that our partner Tasuleasa Social is engaged in. We have worked closely with them on a number of environmental projects and are looking forward to supporting them further as they develop the plan for Calimani National Park.”

Over the 27 months of the initiative, Coca-Cola Hellenic Romania and Tasuleasa Social will work in partnership with Romania’s Environment, Tourism and Regional Development, and Education Ministries and the Calimani National Park Administration. These partners will also engage with environmental protection agencies and school inspectorates from four counties, along with local authorities, local communities and 30 schools.

Since forming its partnership with Tasuleasa Social, Coca-Cola Hellenic Romania has been involved in a number of large-scale volunteer projects. These projects have included more than 300 employees and 3,000 young people, who between them have planted 45,000 trees, cleaned 450 km of river banks, and successfully implemented a waste separation and recovery programme.

Coca-Cola Hellenic is recognised by Dow Jones Sustainability Index as being in the top 10% of the most sustainable companies in the world. A longstanding participant of the UN Global Compact, it has also been consistently listed on the FTSE4Good Index since 2000 and works with over 200 stakeholder organisations at local, national and international levels in pursuing sustainability goals.
