CHICAGO, Sep. 14 /CSRwire/ - Northern Trust, a leading provider of financial services for institutions, affluent individuals and families, announced today that it was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the North America Index for 2011/2012. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) ranks companies based on their corporate sustainability performance. The DJSI World Index ranks the top 10 percent of the world's 2,500 largest companies, while the North America Index ranks the top 20 percent of the 600 largest companies in the United States and Canada.

“We are honored that Northern Trust has been included on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes based on our ongoing sustainability efforts around the world,” said Connie Lindsey, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Northern Trust. “For more than 120 years, Northern Trust has remained committed to our responsibilities as a financial, social and environmental corporate citizen, and we hope to continue to positively impact the global community we serve.”

Each year, the DJSI works in partnership with the Sustainable Asset Management Group to conduct a comprehensive analysis of more than 1,000 companies to create the sustainability indexes. Launched in 1999, the indexes rank companies based on economic, environmental and social performance factors, including corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labor practices.

Northern Trust’s corporate social responsibility efforts have aligned with the corporation’s guiding principles of service, expertise and integrity since its inception in 1889. Northern Trust is dedicated not only to meeting the needs of clients and shareholders, but also giving back to the communities it serves. Corporate social responsibility at Northern Trust involves volunteerism, philanthropy, sound business practices and ethics, and a conservation-minded approach to protecting the environment.
