If you were a woman in rural Benin today, you would spend 10 hours each week carrying food and water. As a Tanzania Masaai woman, you would walk up to 30 kilometers each way to collect water in the dry season. If you're reading these facts (source: World Bank), you are probably not a Masaai woman or a rural woman in Benin. You are probably a woman or man who has the ability to make a difference.

Even small changes can make a big impact. On March 8th, the U.S. Chamber BCLC and the UN Office for Partnerships, in collaboration with the Global Business Coalition, the Center for International Private Enterprise, and United Nations Girl Up Campaign, are hosting a one-day conference titled "Investing in Women and Entrepreneurship: Solutions to MDG 3." The conference will serve to share best practices and lessons learned, uncover replicable partnership models, and connect companies with agencies and organizations that are investing in women in girls in rural communities around the world.

"Over the past year we have seen increased emphasis from the corporate community on investing in women and girls," said Taryn Bird, BCLC's manager of global corporate citizenship. "While this has been a priority investment area for many BCLC members, a plethora of new partnership models are leveraging private-sector technical expertise for education programs, training courses at the business level, and creating the ripe environments for women-run SMEs to flourish."

The CEO of Dermalogica, Dan Ginsberg, will deliver the keynote speech titled "Providing Economic Opportunity to Women - Connecting Consumers and Companies with Women Entrepreneurs." Additional speakers include actress and activist Geena Davis, Abbott Laboratories' Katherine Pickus, UN Women's Antonie de Jong, Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation's Marcela Manubens, Intel's Suzanne Fallender, Merck Foundation's Ellen Lambert, and the Georges Malaika Foundation's Noella Coursaris Musunka.

The event takes place at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Registration is limited but still available. Visit the Chamber BCLC's website to learn more about the speakers and agenda and to register. Videos and articles will be updated on BCLCblog throughout the day, and the official Twitter feed of the event is #csrwomen (follow BCLC's Twitter feed on @chamberBCLC). Media partners that will be offering real-time updates include CSRwire and Devex.
