In recognition of his contributions to the field of health services research and lifelong achievements, Uwe E. Reinhardt, Ph.D., has been named the 2010 recipient of the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research. The Prize, funded by The Baxter International Foundation and managed by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), will be awarded on June 5, 2010, at the AUPHA Annual Meeting in Portland, Ore.

Dr. Reinhardt is recognized as one of the leading U.S. authorities on healthcare economics and health policy, and is the James Madison Professor of Political Economy and Professor of Economics at Princeton University. Dr. Reinhardt serves, or has served, on a number of government commissions and advisory boards including the Physician Payment Review Commission established by the U.S. Congress to advise on issues related to physician payment; the National Council on Health Care Technology of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, now the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS); the Special Advisory Board of the Department of Veterans Affairs; and the DHHS National Advisory Board of the Agency for Health Care Quality and Research. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and in 2006 was appointed to chair the state’s health reform commission.

"He has been instrumental in crafting and critiquing health reform as we now know it. The Graham Prize Committee was unanimous in recognizing Dr. Reinhardt's continuing impact on healthcare research and national policy, and looks forward to celebrating his accomplishments with the Prize."

Dr. Reinhardt is or has been a member of numerous editorial boards including the Journal of Health Economics, Milbank Memorial Quarterly, Health Affairs, New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Reinhardt received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University.

Since 1986, The Baxter International Foundation and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration have awarded the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research to recognize researchers who have made major contributions to the health of the public through innovative research in health services. Originally known as The Baxter International Foundation Prize for Health Services Research, the prize was renamed the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research in 2006 to honor the late William B. Graham, long-time chairman and CEO of Baxter International Inc. The Prize has long been internationally regarded as the premier recognition for individuals conducting health services research.

The Prize acknowledges national or international contributions of health services researchers who apply analytic methods to examine and evaluate the organization, financing, and/or delivery of health services.
