NSF International Confirms Sustainability Claims of P&G's Future Friendly Products

External Review Helps Future Friendly Provide Clear Environmental Benefits to Consumers Seeking Simple Steps to Sustainable Living

In keeping with Future Friendly's mission to clearly articulate its environmental benefits, the Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) today announced that U.S. Future Friendly products have passed extensive review of their key sustainability claims by NSF International.

"P&G has chosen a rigorous and transparent approach to verify the environmental performance of its products by using an objective, third-party organization," said Malcolm Fox, Sustainability Director, NSF International, an independent, not-for-profit organization committed to protecting and improving public health and the environment.

NSF International evaluated Future Friendly by examining and independently validating claims such as water, waste and energy savings associated with all current Future Friendly products -- among them Tide Coldwater, PUR and Cascade Action Pacs.

"We understand that environmental claims can be confusing, and are working with external partners such as NSF International to ensure that the sustainable benefits of our most trusted brands are internally tested, externally verified and clearly labeled," said Rick Hackman, Associate Director, Technical External Relations, P&G. "As the Future Friendly program grows, we will continue to seek external expert guidance in upholding the highest levels of transparency in our efforts."

Other key measures by Future Friendly to engage external partners include the work of the U.S. Sustainability Expert Advisory Panel (SEAP). The panel has consulted extensively on the U.S. launch of Future Friendly, P&G's multi-brand conservation education platform aimed at helping consumers save energy, save water and reduce waste. The SEAP - composed of national leaders in sustainability and business - convenes regularly to share expertise on sustainability-related issues and to evaluate upcoming consumer-facing initiatives.

In addition to the work of outside partners, all products highlighted within the Future Friendly program meet strict, clearly articulated performance criteria and represent the value, convenience and effectiveness consumers expect from P&G. The criteria for Future Friendly products include:

  • Deliver a measurable and meaningful reduction in one or more of the following categories: energy, water or waste.

  • These reductions must be supported by sound, transparent science and substantiated data.

  • All reductions must pass existing approval systems at P&G.

Today's announcement is the latest milestone in P&G's environmental and social sustainability efforts, which to date include:

  • P&G operations, including 2009 FY results, have reduced (per unit of production) water consumption by 52 percent, energy usage by 48 percent, CO2 emissions by 52 percent and waste disposal by 53 percent since 2002.

  • Since 2007, P&G has achieved $13.1 billion in cumulative sales of products with a significantly reduced environmental impact.

In recognition of P&G's long-term and continued commitment to sustainability and its real achievements, the FTSE4Good and Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) included P&G since their inception, and the Financial Times and Just Means honored P&G with the 2008/2009 Social Innovation Award. Corporate Knight also ranked P&G in the top 15 of its 2010 "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World" list. Sustainability is part of P&G's Purpose to touch and improve the lives of the worlds' consumers, now and for generations to come.
