EMC Corporation Joins Ceres Network of Companies

Ceres, a leading network of investors, environmental groups and other public interest organizations working with companies to address sustainability challenges, announced today that EMC Corporation, a leader in information infrastructure solutions, has joined the Ceres' Corporate network. Companies that join Ceres endeavor to make continuous strides in improving their sustainability performance and reporting practices, and engage with investors, environmental groups, and other stakeholders.

EMC describes its approach to sustainability as "looking inward, outward, and ahead," and has established a structure to ensure that the sustainability strategy is integrated across the global enterprise. Led by Kathrin Winkler, EMC's Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, EMC's Green Business Leadership team brings together representatives from all functional business units and drives implementation of the sustainability strategy.

"EMC is committed to improving its own sustainability performance, and providing leadership to leverage the impact of its industry," said Ceres president Mindy Lubber. "We look forward to working with EMC to deepen its social and environmental commitments, and recognize the exponential impact EMC can have by providing sustainability solutions to customers through its products and services."

EMC has put forward a strategy and commitments to address GHG emissions and energy used in operations and by their products, as well as in the material content, recycling, and disposal of products and packaging.

"At EMC, we take the long view. We're determined to sustain our company's relevance and vitality for decades to come," said Joe Tucci, EMC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "So we strive to make decisions and operate our business in a sustainable way. We know the world is endlessly interconnected and recognize that our company's prosperity depends on a healthy environment and a vital society. While we are proud of our progress, we know we're on a journey and have much to learn about operating as a sustainable company. Being a member of the highly regarded Ceres network is a real plus. We will tap into its wealth of knowledge. We will draw on its connections to help us deepen our engagement with diverse stakeholders. Our overriding aim is to advance our own sustainability initiatives while contributing to the world's movement to a low-carbon economy."

In recent years, EMC has created an Office of Corporate Sustainability, formalized an environmental governance structure, and defined a sustainability strategy. The Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the company’s sustainability program. The company has also:

  • formalized a Design for Environment program that leverages its existing design process as well as the principles of cradle-to-cradle philosophy,

  • launched a global Supply Chain Management Social and Environmental Responsibility Program to promote sustainability in its supply chain, and

  • implemented a robust waste recycling program in its U.S. and Ireland facilities and a "zero-discharge" closed loop water system in its Franklin, MA, facility.

Companies that join Ceres must make continuous strides in improving their sustainability performance and reporting practices, and engage with investors, environmental groups, and other stakeholders.
