Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation's Recycling division has partnered with Waste Services, Inc. (WSI) to operate WSI's materials recycling facility (MRF) in Hialeah, FL, near Miami.

This is the third such arrangement between the two companies. Smurfit-Stone also operates WSI's Taft and Sanford MRFs near Orlando, FL.

"Our work with WSI in Hialeah builds on the already strong relationship between our two companies," said Mike Oswald, senior vice president and general manager of Smurfit-Stone's Recycling division. "Combining our talent and resources allows both our companies to better serve our customers by providing an efficient and fiscally sound solution to the waste and recycling needs of Miami-Dade County."

Smurfit-Stone's recycling and waste management solutions and innovative partnerships help communities, businesses and waste haulers turn what was a waste expense into a source of revenue and an environmental benefit.

"Coupling Smurfit-Stone's expertise in the recycling industry with WSI’s strength in the collection and disposal industry increases the recycling services we can provide to the residents of Miami-Dade County, benefiting our customers, our shareholders and ultimately our environment," said Vahe' Gabriel, WSI Regional Vice President - South Florida.

Hialeah Mayor Julio Robiana said, "WSI is a strong corporate partner of the City of Hialeah and I am excited to see them partner with Smurfit-Stone. Their combined experience brings great promise to the industry. I look forward to seeing these companies continue to thrive in our great city."

Smurfit-Stone operates 29 MRFs in the United States and offers comprehensive recycling and waste solutions to a wide range of customers including retailers, manufacturers, grocers, printers, municipalities and waste haulers. The company collected approximately 6.6 million tons of recyclables in 2008.

In addition to benefiting communities and business partners, Smurfit-Stone's recycling operations also provide a secure source of fiber for its mill system.
