Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs P.J. Crowley will address the U.S. Department of State's fourth annual Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists on Tuesday, September 29th at 9:00 am in the Loy Henderson Conference Room. Following brief remarks, Assistant Secretary Crowley will take questions from this year's group of nearly 150 Murrow journalists from over 100 countries. This session will be open to the press. Immediately following, the Aspen Institute will conduct a symposium on "Current Issues in Journalism."

Following their orientation in Washington, the Murrow journalists will travel to 11 leading journalism schools to take part in academic workshops examining journalistic principles and practices, both in the United States and around the world. Partner universities are: the University of Georgia; the University of Nevada, Reno; the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg; the University of Southern California; the University of Oklahoma; the University of Minnesota; the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Syracuse University; the University of Maryland; Marquette University; and the University of Tennessee.

Participants will then travel to several cities and towns throughout the United States, to gain an understanding of media coverage of state politics and government and to observe American civic life and grassroots involvement in political affairs at the local level. The program will conclude in New York City, where the Murrow journalists will meet with U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Alejandro Wolff, who will give an on-the-record presentation on U.S. priorities in the United Nations under the new Administration. The participants will also visit major U.S. media outlets and take part in discussions highlighting current trends and challenges facing the media in the United States and in other countries.

The Murrow Program is an innovative public-private partnership between the Department of State, the Aspen Institute, and leading U.S. schools of journalism. In conjunction with these partners, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) developed a specialized International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) that each year brings emerging leaders in the field of journalism from around the world to the United States, in order to engage in dialogue with their U.S. counterparts and to examine journalistic practices. This year's program takes place from September 26 to October 17, 2009.
