CSRwire - Washington, DC - June 10, 2009 - Citizens Development Corps (CDC) calls for public and political support for President Barack Obama's call to create a business volunteer corps and his dynamic vision for a new era of international volunteerism, global citizenship, and service.

President Obama, in his June 4 speech in Cairo, Egypt, said that the United States would drive economic development by creating "a new corps of business volunteers to partner with counterparts in Muslim-majority countries." "At CDC, we know that a corps of business volunteers can turn citizen diplomacy into an economic engine," said CDC President & COO Deirdre White. "That engine can create long-lasting prosperity, economic opportunities, and jobs." Starting with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of the Soviet Union, CDC has sent thousands of business volunteers to provide services to firms, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, associations, and governments in over fifty countries worldwide.

CDC sends short-term expert business volunteers to work on two-week to two-month assignments providing training or consulting assistance to counterparts in emerging markets. Additionally, as part of our MBA Enterprise Corps division, we recruit recently-graduated MBAs from the top fifty US business schools to volunteer one year of service to provide critically-needed skills to the private and public sectors in developing economies. Finally, we work with multinational firms to design and implement corporate volunteerism programs that allow teams of employees to provide specialized skills while learning key cultural competencies in frontier markets.

Our work directly supports President Obama's mission. From the vice president of a major investment bank who spent a year working with government ministries in Southern Sudan to the engineering executive who traveled to post-tsunami Indonesia to manage supply chains for the reconstruction effort to the local government official who assisted municipalities in rural Guatemala with financial management, CDC's volunteers represent the best of America and have provided both critical skills and citizen diplomacy to their counterparts in emerging markets.

CDC supports the call to create a presidential initiative that utilizes public-private partnerships to create a corps of business volunteers to work in emerging markets, including countries with majority Muslim populations. There is both an incredible need for American skills internationally and an incredible desire by Americans to give back and to engage as global citizens. Because of our nearly twenty years experience promoting economic growth and citizen diplomacy worldwide, we look forward to providing thought leadership and practical expertise as this corps is created.
