During a reception held recently by Drug Store News in honor of a cover story on Albertson's (NYSE: ABS - news), a donation of $10,000 was made on behalf of Albertson's to the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance. In addition, during the month of March Albertson's Drug Division raised over $80,000 which was donated to NCCRA in observance of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. These funds will be used for colon cancer research and a public awareness program.

''It was a great honor to be featured in a well-known and respected publication like Drug Store News,'' said Kevin Tripp, Albertson's Executive Vice President, Drug and General Merchandise, ''And we are thrilled to choose the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance as the recipient of the $10,000 donation.''

Tripp added that some stores also handed out colon cancer screening kits to customers during March, raising additional awareness among Albertson's shoppers. A total of $90,000 was donated to the NCCRA as a result of the store fundraising program and the Drug Store News event.

''The National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance wishes to thank Albertson's not only for the generous donation from its fundraising campaign, but also for the additional $10,000,'' said Steve Telliano, Alliance Coordinator for the NCCRA, ''These funds will be used to help raise public awareness and to fund critical research to find a cure for colon cancer. With Albertson's help, we hope to increase the number of people who obtain testing for colon cancer and are cured of this disease.''

The NCCRA is dedicated to the eradication of colon cancer by harnessing the power of celebrity to promote education, fundraising, research and early medical screening. The National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA) was co-founded by NBC TODAY show co-anchor Katie Couric, nationally-known cancer fund raiser Lilly Tartikoff, and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a California-based 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.

Albertson's Drug Division operates over 800 free-standing Osco Drug and Sav-on Drug stores in 21 states. Albertson's also operates over 2000 pharmacies in its food and drug stores nationwide. Albertson's is one of the largest food-drug chains in the United States and currently operates over 2,500 stores in 36 states.
