PITTSBURGH - At ceremonies today attended by Governor Rendell and Alcoa officials, Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced that it has awarded $100,000 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Emergency Management Agency to assist in the deployment of First Responder Training for professionals and private citizens who respond immediately to accidents, public emergencies or natural disasters.

The Pennsylvania grant is part of nearly $1.5 million in grants that Alcoa has awarded in the last three months in more than 108 Alcoa communities around the world to increase community preparedness training for a wide range of emergencies. The grants are part of the Alcoa Relief Fund, a $2.5 million pledge that Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation made in the wake of September 11 to help communities where Alcoa operates and those directly affected by the events of September 11.

This $100,000 grant represents a special award to help Pennsylvania prepare those professionals and civilians who are trained and ready to respond to emergencies. This grant honors those who perished near Shanksville, PA on Flight 93 on September 11 and supports the emergency response training of many other Pennsylvanians.

"We have thousands of employees in Pennsylvania, and more than a dozen facilities here. This is a state that bore a special burden on September 11, and it is the state where Alcoa was founded and continues to flourish. This is why we have made a special award to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to assist in the training of more people who respond first to emergencies and disasters," said Richard B. Kelson, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Alcoa.

"Because of their training and compassion, these emergency volunteers and public safety professionals are able to save lives, prevent injury or loss of property and restore calm when trouble strikes unexpectedly. Alcoa's Relief Fund expresses Alcoa's commitment to safety and community well being, and fulfills our pledge to help Alcoa communities directly in a meaningful way in the wake of September 11, 2001," added Kelson who presented the check to Governor Rendell in Harrisburg.

Alcoa Foundation administers the Alcoa Relief Fund. In addition to the special $100,000 grant to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, seven other Alcoa communities in Pennsylvania have or will receive awards from the Alcoa Relief Fund for First Responder training in their locales.

Prior grants of the Relief Fund have included support for small and medium sized businesses in the vicinity of the World Trade Center in New York City, the restoration of the only architectural scale model of the World trade Center by Save America's Treasures, a partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and for other human service needs in New York. Additional grants from Alcoa Foundation supported emergency related needs in Washington D.C. and New York City immediately after September 11.
