Armstrong's Wood Products Operations Adopts Stronger Environmental Position On Timber Purchasing

Armstrong World Industries, Inc. (NYSE: ACK) said today that its wood products operations division (Triangle Pacific Corp.) will only purchase gatewood timber from companies who can certify that it was harvested by loggers trained in the industry's "Best Management Practices" (BMP) program.

Implementation of the policy will begin immediately, and is expected to be operational throughout the company by the end of 2001.

BMP employs harvesting techniques that incorporate elements of sustainability, bio-diversity, erosion control and water quality. Practices and training are provided through the auspices of state forestry agencies. In most states, the criteria for BMP resemble those of the American Society of Foresters and the American Forest and Paper Association.

"Keeping pace with environmental standards is a key part of our business strategy. Implementing BMP in our gatewood purchasing process is yet another step in our ongoing drive to set and maintain the highest levels of environmental practices in the industry," said Armstrong Wood Products Operations President Floyd F. Sherman.

Armstrong World Industries is a global leader in the design, innovation and manufacture of interior finishing solutions, most notably floors and ceilings.
