Bank of America Report Highlights Commitment to Communities

CHARLOTTE--Bank of America announced today its release of a report on the company's community involvement activities entitled, "Higher Standards: A Commitment to Our Communities." The report and other highlights of Bank of America community impact programs may be viewed on the company's Web site: www.bankofamerica.com/community.

Highlighted in the report are initiatives representing a variety of Bank of America community programs, including:

  • Financing and a combination of equity investments totaling $14 million to restore the historic Hippodrome Performing Arts Center in Baltimore, Maryland
  • The bank's "America/Works" initiative, providing jobs and career paths for 7,000 individuals who had been on public assistance
  • A five-year, $50 million commitment to "Success By 6" to help United Way agencies across the country prepare children for school
  • Bank of America was the first major U.S. financial services company to endorse the CERES Principles, a corporate code of conduct for environmental responsibility
  • 4,000 Team Bank of America volunteers, who collectively helped clean 50 miles of coastline in 12 states.
  • Sponsorship of the U.S. Olympic Team, making it possible for our country's best athletes to represent the United States in world-class competition. The bank has sponsored the U.S. Olympic Team since 1992.
The report focuses on several community touchpoints in the market areas served by the Bank of America coast-to-coast network of 4,400 banking centers, and outlines initiatives in five distinct categories:

  • Community Development Banking, through investments and lending programs
  • Bank of America Foundation, supporting programs in student achievement, financial education, affordable housing and economic development
  • Environmental Initiatives, promoting higher standards of environmental protection compatible with economic development and community growth
  • Team Bank of America, an associate and retiree volunteer network
  • Sponsorships, bringing benefits to communities by supporting cultural, sporting and other activities.
The report also features an update on the unprecedented 10-year pledge by Bank of America in 1998 to devote $350 billion to community development loans and investments. Through 2002, the bank had fulfilled more than $163 billion of that commitment in the areas of economic development, small business financing and services, affordable housing loans and investments and consumer lending. Through its commitment, Bank of America has forged strategic alliances with hundreds of national and local nonprofit organizations. In recognition of its community commitments, Bank of America received an "outstanding" rating in 2003 from federal regulators who monitor the bank's compliance with the Community Reinvestment Act.
