Jan. 03 /CSRwire/ - On Saturday, February 10, 2001, Celebration and Vision: The Hewitt Collection of African-American Art will open at the California African-American Museum located in Exposition Park in Los Angeles. Recognized as one of the century's most comprehensive collections of African-American art, the exhibit will visit the California African-American Museum on its national tour.

In 1998, Bank of America purchased The Hewitt Collection from collectors John and Vivian Hewitt who assembled 58 works of art for more than 50 years. The bank's philanthropic arm, Bank of America Foundation, is underwriting a three-year national tour, which will enable people around the country to view this significant collection.

"We feel honored to be able to share an exhibit of this magnitude with our community," said Liam McGee, president, Bank of America California. "Angelenos of all ages and backgrounds will be able to view the collection and have an opportunity to celebrate the African-American culture."

The 58 works in the collection range in style from straightforward representation to total abstraction. The collection, which features works by 20 artists of color, including Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett and Henry O. Tanner, was listed this year in Art & Antiques magazine's compilation of top 100 treasures.

The collection will be on display from February 10 to April 15. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free. For more information about the collection, call (213)744.7423 or visit www.caam.ca.gov.

Bank of America has a strong commitment to preserving and creating awareness of arts and culture in the communities where it does business. In keeping with this commitment, the bank has promised to donate the collection to the Afro-American Cultural Center in Charlotte, N.C., following its nationwide tour.
