PEORIA, Ill., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Caterpillar Inc.
(NYSE: CAT) has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) for the eighth straight year and has retained the leadership position in the Industrial Engineering sector for the third year.

"Our rating on this global index provides an external perspective and recognition of our social, economic and environmental activities," said Doug Oberhelman, Caterpillar group president. "It's an important indicator for investors, non-governmental organizations and governmental groups analyzing our performance in these areas."

Launched in 1999, the annual DJSI process involves a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance and citizenship, risk management, branding, climate strategy, supply chain standards, product stewardship and occupational health and safety.

"We have worked diligently to hold our company to a higher standard, particularly in the area of greenhouse gas emissions, by establishing an absolute greenhouse gas reduction target at Cat facilities worldwide," said Caterpillar's Director of Social Responsibility, Jody Howard. "Another significant highlight of the past year has been the public announcement of 2020 goals for our products, services and solutions to accompany our previously established operations goals."

Caterpillar strives to align sustainability efforts with business strategy and focuses on areas where it can have the potential to make a significant positive impact.

"Our employees and dealers continue to work diligently to provide sustainable solutions to our customers," said Oberhelman. "At the same time we always look within to determine how to better our own operations. From our green buildings policy to programs like a new recycling center in one of our facilities in India -- the proceeds of which fund social responsibility programs in the local community -- our success must also contribute to the prosperity and sustainability of communities where we work and live."

Caterpillar's annual Sustainability Report further highlights the company's focus on sustainability. The current report examines how areas of the company's business interconnect with issues such as energy use, climate change, economic growth, free trade, employee engagement and philanthropy.
